How do you draw "rough" hair?

@saab,
Thank you. I was just told:

"For Ruffy's hair, you can go for a spiky look of erratic lines. You can use darker and thicker hair to create a difference between the rough and tough hair. You can also search for online ideas, on how you can create different hair styles for your characters as well."

I HAD THESE CHARACTERS FOR A LONG TIME. I WAS A BIT LEERYABOUT POSTING ANY ART ONLINE FOR A LONG TIME BECAUSE I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT COPYRIGHT ISSUES.

I just did a Google image search on "tough hair", "tough guy" and "hair", and I see I wasn't too far off with Tuffy's hair:

@MontereyJack,
I AM MAKING A MULTICULTURAL COMIC BOOK. I AM USING DIFFERENT CAT AND DOG BREEDS TO REPRESENT DIFFERENT RACES AND CULTURES.

THOSE DRAWINGS ARE NOT PRELIMINARY SKETCHES. I WAS SIMPLY ASKING HOW CAN I FIX OR IMPROVE UPON A CHARACTER'S HAIR.

NO, THEY ARE NOT ALL GOING TO BE WHITE.

How would you fix the brother on the right's hair? I gave them a different color scheme to make them easier to tell apart.

You could give him the personality of a maverick and give him an entirely different hairstyle from his brother. Just because they are brothers doesn't mean their hair has to be so similar. Give him a little independence from his brother. Give him some hair spikes, maybe something like the military haircut of the Maverick character in Top Gun.

@Butrflynet,
True - I want one to be tough and the other to be rough.

@Butrflynet,
I like the idea of themes. Tuffy's theme color is green. His brother Ruffy's theme color is copper- I decided to make it copper instead of green because I thought it would a bit confusing if they both had green as a theme color, since Ruffy is one of the central characters. Copper is the closest color compliment to green that isn't red. Tuffy's relatives (his brothers, sisters and possibly cousins) are all going to wear a T-shirt or some modified version/variation of it, and garrison belts - square buckle for the males and round buckle for the females. Their shirts or tops are are all going to be green, with Ruffy being they only exception or one of the few exceptions. And their eyes will match the color of their shirts or tops.

I wanted Tuffy's and Ruffy's hair to reflect their namesakes.
I also wanted Tuffy's siblings and cousins to have slang names - either names that start with "T" and end with "Y" or names that rhyme with Tuffy and end with "Y".

Some of Tuffy's friends wear a t-shirt and garrison belt.

Mario and Luigi have a theme:

So do Wario and Waluigi:

and Huey Dewey and Louie:

and the Chipmunks:

@JGoldman10,
Notice though, that there is a difference in the way their two moustaches are drawn? They aren't the same.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fzITBf5SQS4/Te0IOcVtlcI/AAAAAAAAAQg/GFe-7n7ay5k/s1600/25cce0c0_mario-luigi.jpg

Notice their mouth expressions are different, as are their hand positions. They are a theme, not duplicates.

Notice that they have a theme, but only one is wearing glasses and only one is wearing a hat, and only one has their initial on their shirt. They have a similar theme, but are not duplicates.

@Butrflynet,
Yes, that is why I gave Tuffy one type pf hairstyle and his brother Ruffy a slightly different one, and two different color schemes. The shirt-and-belt theme is the same. Tuffy's siblings and cousins will have the same or similar shirt-and-belt theme, with green being the predominant theme color.

Huey, Dewey and Louie are identical save their color schemes.

Mario and Luigi were originally identical.

@Butrflynet,
People wouldn't be able to tell the Ducks apart without giving each one a different color scheme:

@Butrflynet,
Another theme in my comic- since I am writing about streetfighters they are all going to have slang names - good and bad guys.

I just did a Google Image search on "rough hair" and found this:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_bx9hgeAxE9M/TFcMVX7vwFI/AAAAAAAAADk/Sn1CscikC0s/s1600/Men-Hair-Style-Tips.jpg

That isn't too far off from what I had with Ruffy's hair.

When I thought of rough hair initially I thought of "wild hair". I just did an image search on it:

http://i.istockimg.com/file_thumbview_approve/14631325/2/stock-photo-14631325-man-with-wild-hair.jpg
http://www.menshairstyles.net/d/79140-2/Black+men+hairstyle+with+a+wild+style_very+cool.PNG

These aren't even close to what I had envisioned for Ruffy's hair.

This image I just found under "wild man's hair" came close:
http://cache2.artprintimages.com/p/LRG/29/2902/I1LPD00Z/art-print/jim-mcguire-man-with-wild-hair-petting-a-chicken.jpg

I see I wasn't too far off.

@JGoldman10,
You ungrateful git. MJ was actually giving a bit of constructive criticism, thgey are too similar, you should distinguish if you're trying ti pitch this at kids. It's not a lot to show for 5 years of work.

MJ and the others like him who responded to this thread are IDIOTS. I have been talking about my comics on here for a while and getting them developed. I have a BUNCH of characters that I have drawn and created and are in development. I ask a question about changing the HAIRSTYLE of ONE OF THE CHARACTERS THAT I ALREADY HAVE, AND YOU ASSUME THAT IS ALL I HAVE TO SHOW FOR ALL THE TIME I HAVE BEEN ON HERE - IDIOTS. DON'T MAKE ASININE ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT MY WORK. MY STUFF HAS BEEN IN DEVELOPMENT LONG BEFORE I CAME ON HERE.

NO ONE ASKED HOW LONG IT TOOK ME TO SHOW SOMETHING - THAT IS IMMATERIAL.

So you've mean 'researching,' even longer than we thought. How long has it been, 10 yrs, 20yrs or even longer?

they really suck. very flat. very boring.

you are going to need to give them some attitude with their looks, or you have nothing but what looks like a copied sketch.

i wont bother giving you REAL feed back. I have seen you shoot down others because it isnt praise.
But Im sorry. those characters are very simple and very boring.

Oh. Wait..

isnt that what I said you would produce? hey. im a psychic Smile

@shewolfnm,
I don't want YOUR feedback. I tried asking you about SELF-PUBLISHING since you CLAIM to be a SELF-PUBLISHER and you attacked me and tried to insult me.

THESE ARE CHARACTERS FOR KIDS. I GIVE A FIG IF YOU THINK THEY ARE BORING.

BUG OFF - I WILL ASK OTHERS HERE ABOUT SELF-PUBLISHING.
