@spendius,
I happen to agree with this...
Quote:The motivating force in the mythology of success is ambition, which is closely akin to the cardinal Christian sin of pride. In a world that works through ambition and self-help, while inculcating an ethic that looks upon their results with disdain, how can an earnest man, a public figure living in a time of crisis, gratify his aspirations and yet remain morally whole.?
I think it has a lot more to do with humble, patience, perseverance, practice, peace, faith and obedience...then it has to do with ambition and self help...Or I would say those things I have said, lead one to find themselves, often from religion, religious, church, prying, reflections of conscious...self awareness, self evaluation, self worthy, self truthfulness, self honesty...honesty, will, caring, willingness to care...etc...And using them together, and not trying to work against those things...
I happen to agree with most of what this professor said...Especially about accepting the virtues, but not being able to practice them...But I do not understand, it sounds like he is saying it is hard to be humble, because it requires you to battle pride (a deadly sin) with humility (a virtue) when you practice the faith without the church? But I would say church or no church, everyone knows if they think they fall to the deadly sins, or are doing the virtues, even in a humble way with our own consciousness....
And wasn't Lincoln an atheist? Where did you hear, or why do you think (besides this professor) that Lincoln was even a man of "private religious intensity"?
Humility is already one of the 7 virtues Spendius, and since it combats the worst deadly one (pride) I would have to say it is the highest virtue...No?
I personally think from what God has said to me, the only deadly sin that exists is rejection of God...
I think many will flip that around to personal rational ways of justifying sin, which is not my intent...Because I feel that EVERY sin separates you from God and makes it that much harder to let your soul be in ultimate peace...
But I do believe that so long as you have faith, you will not be lost...Even if God is going to condemn people...Which I do not believe anyways...
I think every sin is deadly, and there is a heavenly virtue for every sin...
Or you could say (from the church's perspective, with my own views) I think that deadly sins extent well beyond "7" And so do the heavenly virtues...
