@ehBeth,
What's even more disturbing, is that if he felt it was porn, he might have been aroused by it.

For just this once I have to agree with punkey -- childish and not at all funny. But porn? Spare me.

I have found out that what is funny to me can be offensive to others. We should be more sensitive if we are responding to someone that we know will be offended. And there is nothing wrong with apologizing either.

@wandeljw,
That's right to a point, wandel, but we all know JGoldman10 - just by typing
in one of his threads, you're offensive to him. Heck, he's got 2/3 of a2k on
ignore and the other 1/3 isn't far behind.

In the book of political correctness we have come as far as apologizing already
before we step on someone's toes.

@CalamityJane,
Thank you, I didn't know how to reply without sounding an arsehole. Regarding the cartoon strip, some of it is cultural, Viz is essentially a parody of British comics like Whizzer and Chips from the 1970s/80s. Buster Gonad follows a similar format as Sid's Snake, which was about a boy who was unusual because he had a pet snake. Some are funnier than others.

One thing which will not be obvious from the cartoon shown is that as well as a strong vein of schoolboy lavatory humour there is also some real high brow stuff, Literary, Historical and Philosophical references are dotted all over the place. I can understand if people don't like it, but I cannot see why Punkey had to single out women in particular. I know loads of women who like Viz.

I've had a bit of a spat with a certain evangelical poster. He has accused me of posting porn on his thread. My response was to laugh. Seriously do any of you feel any stirrings when you see this cartoon?

Izzy in another thread we talked about our autistic sons taking things too literally.... don't you think this is the same thing that's going on with JG? I don't think he has any option but to be evangelical because that is what he's been taught by his mother and his church and I don't think he has the capability to critique that in any way or to take it less than literally. He clearly intellectually and/or developmentally very limited - he doesn't understand sarcasm, irony or anything but the most basic sense of humour, and he ignores any post that puts forward a vaguely intellectual, logical argument. When I first saw him here he was having difficulty just working out how to use the bbcode. He asked for technical help for something the other day and the reply he got was obviously too difficult and he just said that he'd contact the manufacturer. I don't think he is able to distinguish between this kind of humour and porn.
Of course this is just my opinion and I know some people don't think he's who he says he is. But I'm not sure anyone would bother carrying on with a fake persona like this over several years and websites. I used to give him a hard time when I first encountered him but now I rarely respond to his posts.

@CalamityJane,
I am reluctant to pile on some posters, well, hey, one in particular, who I think leads a tough and extremely out of touch life. Taunting is brutal to take, or maybe is invigorating, depending, and usually doesn't help, except to make the poster start screaming in caps. If someone is very depressed, it can be terrible.

I won't say taunting never does work, as I remember back to changing some opinions of my own because I thought about a flipped taunt past the usual f/u process. But here, it's clear the recent or past taunting extravaganzas are no help, and it's getting meaner.

I think do no harm is an issue, and try to stop myself, not continually successfully.

@MonaLeeza,
Thank you, I do remember our little chat.

I'm not surprised that people could find Viz offensive, but pornographic? I couldn't believe it, I literally burst out laughing, but at the same time I don't want other people thinking I'd posted porn, without looking at what I'd actually posted. Anyway just to show how daft Viz is here are some top tips.

@izzythepush,
Nothing pornographic, and nothing particularly funny.

I suppose you can school me on why a character with exposed gargantuan balls is a perfect example of the sophisticated wit of the British. While you’re at it, you might also explain why Benny Hill should be considered a comedic genius.

This is not to say that a character with exposed gargantuan balls could not be funny, but this one surely isn't.

Oh and the crap offered by a fellow poster about the sense of humor of Puritan America...Do you live in America? Have you ever been in America? Have you ever watched American TV or listened to American Radio?

No matter whether you are a Puritan or a Libertine, there is nothing intrinsically funny about a guy walking around with giant balls hanging out of his pants.

Now if it was a woman with giant tits hanging out of her blouse....

@Finn dAbuzz,
Benny Hill hasn't been shown on UK television since the early 1980's. I never understood why anybody would like it. Is it still shown over there? Do you still watch it? As usual you've allowed your own feelings of inadequacy to get in the way of your judgement. This is a question about one comic strip, but you've turned it into some trans Atlantic comedy war.

Or maybe you think it's all about you. When I referred to you as Finnbar, you sat quietly seething. It was only when Hingehead referred to Viz that you asked him to explain the reference. You can be really witless Finnbar, I even wrote out the full name of the comic strip, it couldn't have been any easier. Too tricky for you though, to stick the ref into google to see what all the fuss was about. Oh dear, oh dear, no wonder you feel inadequate.

@izzythepush,
Izzy you can mangle my user name however you see fit, and I assure you I will not seeth. I think it's jeuvenile much the same as finding a man with gargantuan testicles hanging out of his pants to be inherently funny.

And as the mother of a child with an ASD you think it's ok to taunt a person who very likely also has an ASD or is at least similarly limited in some way?

@MonaLeeza,
Are we talking about Finn or Goldie? Anyone who postulates such an extreme evangelical system should not be allowed to go unchallenged. I think you're being too generous towards him. There would be an outcry if he posted racist ideology, but homophobia is fine. It's not, it's every bit as hateful as racism, and should be challenged just as vigorously.

I have tried to put it into context, it's not just a man with gargantuan testicles hanging out of his trousers. However, I'm very happy you don't 'get' Viz. If you did it would spoil it for the rest of us.

@izzythepush,
I'm talking about Goldie. Sure he's racist and homophobic. My point is, as I said in my previous post, that it has become clear that he doesn't have the capability of questioning what he has been taught as fact. There is a difference between challenging his views and the constant mocking and taunting that has been going on here long after it became clear that he had some degree of disability. And of course the mocking doesn't achieve anything other than the amusement of other readers. I would have thought that as the mother of a child with autism you would recognise the characteristics here and be a little more understanding of where he's coming from. I hope that as our sons become adults they are spared this bullying because of their disabilities.
