Tony Perkins, president of the Christian conservative Family Research Council (FRC), has said that gay marriage only brings “pain and heartache.”

Perkins makes the assertion in a new video calling on members to vote their “Biblical values and make a difference.”

“For nearly a generation we've neglected marriage leaving it nearly defenseless for homosexual activists who are now trying to redefine marriage out of existence,” Perkins says in the nearly 4-minute video which is part of the FRC's iVoteValues campaign. “Same-sex marriage: it contradicts God's will as revealed in the creator's word. Violating God's law only brings pain and heartache. Right is called wrong and evil is called good. It is because we have yielded moral authority to the demands of special interests or the ruling of some aberrant judge. As a result all of society suffers.”

A longtime proponent of marriage equality, Brad Pitt has put his money where his mouth is.

The actor has donated $100,000 to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) to support the organization's efforts in campaigning for marriage equality in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington State.

"It's unbelievable to me that people's lives and relationships are literally being voted on in a matter of days," Pitt, 48, wrote in an email to HRC members and supporters on Wednesday. "If you're like me, you don't want to have to ask yourself on the day after the election, what else could I have done?"

MADRID -- Spain's Constitutional Court upheld the legality of the country's gay marriage law on Tuesday, rejecting an appeal contending that marriage in the Spanish constitution means only the union of a man and woman.

The county's top court voted 8-3 to dismiss the appeal of the conservative Popular Party filed shortly after Spain became the world's third country to approve gay marriage.

Spain's Parliament passed the gay marriage law in 2005 when it was Socialist-controlled, with Popular Party deputies opposed. The Popular Party took power late last year after the Socialists were ousted over their handling of the economy.

The gay marriage law angered the predominant Roman Catholic Church but opinion surveys showed most Spaniards backed it. Belgium and the Netherlands approved gay marriage laws before Spain.

For the first time, voters have approved gay marriage rights. Three years after they rejected a similar measure, Maine voters have approved a gay-marriage initiative.

Maryland voters also approved a gay marriage measure Tuesday, upholding a law that had been enacted by the state legislature in March. A gay marriage proposal was also leading in Washington State, while a ban on same-sex marriage in Minnesota was defeated.

HONOLULU (AP) - The actor best known for playing the TV character Gomer Pyle in the 1960s has married his male partner of 38 years.

Hawaii News Now () reports Jim Nabors and his partner, Stan Cadwallader, traveled from their Honolulu home to Seattle to be married Jan. 15.

Gay marriage became legal in Washington state last month.

The 82-year-old Nabors says you've got to solidify something when you've been together as long as they have.

They couple met in 1975 when Cadwallader was a Honolulu firefighter. Cadwallader is 64.

Nabors says he's been open about his homosexuality to co-workers and friends but never acknowledged it to the media before.

Nabors played Gomer Pyle in "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C." television shows.

Anti-gay groups — ranging from the Family Research Council to the Westboro Baptish Church — filed friend-of-the-court briefs before the Supreme Court this week asking justices to uphold California’s Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act.

The briefs filed on Tuesday assert the same arguments seen repeatedly in opposition to a fundamental right to same-sex marriage, such as the inability of gay couples to procreate and the argument that being gay isn’t an immutable characteristic.

The Family Research Council, one the more prominent anti-gay groups opposed to same-sex marriage, filed briefs in both the Prop 8 and DOMA cases. In the Prop 8 brief, the group argues that the California ban on same-sex marriage isn’t discriminatory, among other reasons, because it enables any person to marry — so long as the other person is of the opposite sex.

“Proposition 8 treats men and women the same,” the brief states. “Both may marry someone of the opposite sex; neither may marry someone of the same sex.”

As Right Wing Watch points out, Family Research Council makes arguments on the political power of gays and lesbians that are contradictory. In the Prop 8 brief, the group notes that 30 states have amendments defining marriage as one man, one woman while arguing that “there is no ‘emerging awareness’ that the right to marry extends to same-sex couples.”
