I used to be a Buddhist monk. You can't completely stop all of the mind's activities, I don't think, but with training you can stop thoughts, ie, your mental dialog. It's a bit of mental gymnastics that can help you gain a more acute awareness of the nature of thoughts, thinking, emotions, etc. It can help you detach from them so that you don't get too hung up on passing thoughts and feelings. It's not for everybody and it takes time to develop the ability, but if you're curious, the only way to find out what it's like is to do it yourself. Good luck.
