@aidan,
I also really like Jesse Wilcox Smith's illustrations.

I have Robert Louis Stevensons' A Child's Garden of Verses illustrated by her.
She also did a lot of the Little Golden Books.
I'm sure this is where I first saw her illustrations as those were my first reading experiences.

@aidan,
Tenggren took over illustrating "bland tomtar och troll" after John Bauer passed away.
Bland tomtar och troll came out every year around Christmastime. Every year another cover and new stories.

@panzade,
hmm, wiki says McCloskey wrote and illustrated both books, in fact, Make Way for Ducklings won the 1942 Caldecott Medal for McCloskey's illustrations, executed in charcoal then lithographed on zinc plates.

always loved Tove Jansson and the Moomins

I started a search for Dr Dolittle illustrations, but gave it up. The official site is under construction, but has a page for the pics.

@wandeljw,
Ironically, Doyle was initially dissatisfied with Sidney Paget. He had thought that Paget's brother Walter Paget would be given the commission to illustrate the stories, but the editors of The Strand mistakenly sent the offer to Sidney. Of course, today, our image of Sherlock Holmes is formed by Sidney's illustrations.

@sozobe,
Maybe you'll recall that we did a thread on this very subject years ago. I love Rackham's illustrations, and i also always loved the work of Maxfield Parrish. We had The Tanglewood Tales, by Nathaniel Hawthorne (a re-telling of Greek mythology expressly written for American children), and our copy was illustrated by Parrish.

@edgarblythe,
Beatrix Potter wanted to go to university to study mycology, but her father wouldn't hear of it. When she inherited, she was quite well off, and although she never did attend university, her illustrations of mushrooms and other mycogens are still used in standard texts today.

@Setanta,
Those are gorgeous illustrations. Aside from the life in her details, her colors are subtle and 'right' choices to me.

Now I remember there was another thread..

In the 1960's my grammar school library had old books from The Hardy Boys series. Part of the appeal was the cover art.
