@fbaezer,
I can see why.

Meantime, I looked over at my shoe rack that is being converted to a bookcase (don't get me started), and found that that's where I put Edge of the Storm, in with the savers - it's tied with string. I only have two books tied with string, the other being Danube by Claudio Magris. So, I'm planning on scanning.

Loved the third pic; took me a bit but then turned enthused re the first. Still working on the second.

Frank Frazetta became legendary for his cover illustrations of fantasy novels such as H. Rider Haggard's Conan The Barbarian.

@wandeljw,
I didn't realize Conan was an H Rider Haggard character.

@edgarblythe,
H. Rider Haggard wrote Doc Savage, She, and Conan The Barbarian. He tried to live his personal life as risky as the heroes he created. I think Haggard was only age 31 when he died.

Osso: Frazetta is my all-time favorite illustrator.

Hilda Boswell's Treasury of Poetry was my favourite book as a child. Unfortunately, I can't find many pictures of her books that do her work justice. The illustrations were magical.

I bought my children all of Graeme Base's books. Still have them, the illustrations are beyond beautiful.

@ossobuco,
My favorite children's book illustrator is Peter Sis. Especially the poetry books written by Jack Prelutsky.

But only if you dare!

I like the illustrations that you all have showed. I think especially childrenĀ“s books should have as many details as possible. The British and the American illustrators are very good at that without making the picture look like kitch.
I had/have books illustrated by Bauer and I loved his princesses as a child.
Another one I like is P.J. Lynch

Lili Martin is also one of my favorites. I like her Christmas cards too.

Wilhelm Busch I never liked - neither his stories nor his pictures.

Gustaf Tenggren:
This is the first book I can remember really 'reading' (although I think I memorized it, I had my parents read it to me over and over).

He also illustrated Andersen's Fairy Tales - which was another favorite of mine as a child:

I love his faces:

@aidan,
Another Swede:
Tenggren was a chief illustrator for The Walt Disney Company in the late 1930s, in what has been called the Golden Age of American animation, when animated feature films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Fantasia, Bambi and Pinocchio were produced.
They are not books, but the films are really wonderful. And so much better than many things for children produced today with the funny voices and lots of noice.

@saab,
I agree Saab. I loved his illustrations so much that in my twenties when we had a secret santa and my brother-in-law drew my name as the person he needed to buy a gift for, my sister asked me what I wanted and I told her I wanted the illustrated version of Hans Christian Andersen's fairly tales.

I love Tenggren's art - and I think children really love the Disney stuff because the colors are so saturated.
Here's another beautiful book he illustrated and that I always loved:

@aidan,
I have H.C. AndersenĀ“s books illustrated by Vilh. Pedersen

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_E_o_0Bdm4GA/SghQLl-oQsI/AAAAAAAAO-Y/H6IQyOnN4Uk/s400/Vilhelm+Pedersen3.jpg

It is 6 leather bound books, which I liked so much as a child, that my father just told me to take them to my room. Still in very good condition. Saw on internet that you can now buy them all for 24 dollars. Or 150 kronor. Happy meal McDonalds is 32 kronor.

@saab,
Whereas on the other hand - that small fry and winged horse book is going for $350.00 on Amazon!
Too bad I don't have it- I don't know if we ever did. Maybe I took it out of the library.
