Why was "big hair" such a big thing in the '80s?

I never realized it or thought about it but a lot of people had big hair back then. Why was it such a big thing?

I dunno - fashion is weird. I look back at photos of myself from then and wonder what the heck I was thinking.

Okay-so all those people I reported I should submit a support ticket about them at the Help Desk?
Remember you told me in another thread to contact you regarding all those people I reported? You said I sent reports and people were trying to contact me regarding them and I didn't repond to them?

Send a ticket to the Help Desk for whatever you wish to report.

Every era has had its fashion "trends". In the 80's, t was big hair. In the 70's many women wore wigs, or falls. An actress, or an important person, starts a fad, it catches on with people, and it becomes popular.

I've been wearing my hair in an Afro for years. When I was a kid I was made fun off because I had an Afro but now retro stuff is fashoniable.

I know about blacks having Afros. I was talking about white folks having big hair in the '80s.

Like I mentioned before, every era has its "fads". You don't see many Afros on white people anymore. Ditto long hair and sideburns on men, ditto mullets. The styles come and go, sometimes returning years later in a slightly different form.

I was wearing my hair in an Afro before it was popular again. I never paid too much attention too much attention to trends. I wasn't interested.
I can recall in the '90s I had my hair in a crewcut/cameo and tried to make it look like a hightop fade-I was trying to make it look like Kid's hair:
