I know what you meant. I don't think that the average young person wore hair THAT big. Yeah, if you were in Greenwich Village, or some other hippie enclave, you might see a lot of those styles amongst college students, but I would bet that young people who were in professional positions would avoid those styles like the plague.
I remember once going to Washington Square Park in the Village, and seeing guys with spiked hairdos. Each spike was a different color.
I was a kid in the '80s so I wouldn't know about all that. I just recall seing a lot of older people with big hair.

Afros and big curly hair had something of a resurgence in the 2000's. Singing acts like Lauren Hill, and members from rock bands like Mars Volta would, and still, wear them.
White females with Afros? I can recall seeing some- Carol Burnett and Vicki Lawrence had one. IMO, I think Afros on a lot of white females white females look ridiculous-they look like Raggedy Ann dolls.
