Does it run in your family?

@Josi,
Are you overweight? That might account for it. If not, it is just a matter of genetics and bone structure. How are your dad and your uncles built?

@Josi,
How could anyone give you any meaningful answer without you providing more info? How tall are you and how much do you weigh? How old are you?

@Josi,
You have a normal body mass index.

body mass index does not account for natural fat placement.

a 36 inch waist is not an odd size for a man.
2 of the most popular mens jeans sizes is 34/36 and 40/36
meaning those are the two sizes that sell the most.
Does not mean they are the exact measurement of the man BUYING them..
just that it is the most commonly sold size..

For women, its size 14 and size 16

@PUNKEY,
Yeah, is that 36" around, or 36" diameter?

My hips didn't reach 36" diameter until after I had my triplets.

Where are men's hips, anyway?

I see men with pants setting above that roll above the hip bones and pants below the hip line.

@PUNKEY,
That's a critical question when shopping. At least at Penneys, Levis give the waist size and where they fit: fit at waist, slightly below waist, and at the seat. I keep waiting for a notation that specifies "around the knees". I wish that information were available for all men's pants.

@Josi,
This has gotten pretty confusing.

If you're only 17, 5ft 4in and weigh 125 lbs, my guess is that your pants are more like 32-34 inches at the waist. that is NOT your hips.
However, if you're accurately measuring your hips, they could easily be 36 in.

If you measure your waist, you measure about a half-inch to an inch below your belly button. However, your hip measurement is across the broadest part of your lower body, which is about 3 inches lower and goes across your hips and butt.

So perhaps you'll need to look at the waistband of your jeans for the size lable on your pants. I'll bet they are 32 or 34 inch on the size lable.

Either way, if you weigh 125 lbs, you really don't have a weight problem, as that is what is proper. Isn't that what is at the root of this question?

@shewolfnm,
For example, at age 17, I was 5ft 6in and about 150 lbs, I wore a size 32 waist. But my hips were around 34-35 inches.

if he's in the bell curve proportionately, and he says he's 5ft 4 inches and 125 lbs. So, I'll bet something is missing from his measuring technique or his info.

I'm not sure about that.

I've known/seen a few men who naturally have bigger hips than your "average" male.

Their weight will be normal, they just have a wider/bigger pelvis.

The first thing I thought of when I read the OP was this boy I went through grade school and high school with. He just had wide hips for a male.

I'm sure you mean circumference and not diameter

Are you SURE you're a boy?
A boy probably wouldn't use the word "bust" to describe your upper measurement.

I would think they would use the term "chest"

@chai2,
I understand - which is why I offered my personal example at age 17. Sometimes, young men these days are a bit more worried about self-image and have a distorted view. My example was referring to the bell curve (80%).
