@Swimpy,
I have a task for anyone paying attention to this thread. Can you measure your nightstands and also tell me how tall they are in relation to the mattress on your bed? There doesn't seem to be any standard. I'd be interested in seeing how many different measurements we get.

@Swimpy,
I don't really have a nightstand - my mattress is 25.5 inches tall from the ground and on one side is a desk, around 29.5 inches high and on the other side I have a Chinese cabinet that's about 35.5 inches high, so the desk is 4 inches higher and the cabinet 10 inches more. My headboard is good 40 inches from the ground.

@Rockhead,
Your bed must be really low, RH. The bedside table I'm looking at, the mirrored one is 28" tall. It will probably be an inch or so above the mattress. But the one I'm looking at for the other side is only 24" tall. it will be a good 3" below the top of the mattress. Don't know what that's going to look like.

@Swimpy,
I saw that lamp in the pier one flyer and liked it. I think it would look great!

As far as a bed side table, think about how far up/down you want to reach (while lying down) to turn off a lamp (assuming you read in bed).

@Swimpy,
Love what you've done, Swimpy.

We don’t have standard night tables at home either. The bed is 26” with an antique washstand (maybe washstand isn’t the right name) on one side (28”), and a small chest of drawers on the other (29”).

We do have matching night tables in the master at the cottage, but I can’t give you measurements from here. I’m guessing they’re perhaps slightly higher than the bed, but we opted for a low box spring there. In another bedroom there, we have a nightstand that I think is a little lower on one side, and a small chest of drwers that is a little higher on the other. Ha.

I think you're right, anything goes!

@Joeblow,
I appreciate all of your responses. I guess all that matters is that it looks good and works for you. So today I bought the Pier One mirrored nightstand and the blue glass lamp. It makes me happy to walk in the room now. I have an old side table and lamp on Juan's side of the bed. It will be fine until I find just the right thing. I'll post pics later.

I had resisted putting a TV in the room, but relented. My son and his family are here for a couple of weeks. It's nice to have second TV.

I think I am heading to Pier 1 too Very Happy I love that mirrored nightstand, Swimpy, it looks great. The lamp is perfect too, picks up the blue of the duvet flower so nicely - everything looks just fantastic. You've done well, Swimpy!

@Swimpy,
That headboard looks goofy, as it is too tall for where it is. However, assuming that you already owned it I would still put it in the room. You might have been better off though to but the bed some other place in the room.

BBB had a similar problem with the end tables and lamps on either side of her living room sofa. One table is several inches taller than the other. What she did to balance it out was get two similar table lamps and shades of different height so that when in the right combination, the shades were of equal height. That helped disguise the difference in end table height.

Maybe something like that would work for your bedroom tables.

@Tai Chi,
I'm calling it done. I got a table and a lamp for hubby's side. Also got a little, retro (used), white, chenille swivel chair. Will post photos soon.

@Swimpy,
Walking into the bedroom area (chair from local store liquidation):

Turning to the right you can see the new lamp on the new table on the left side of the bed:

Outside of a few decorative things, I am finished with this project. Thanks for all your help and input.

OMG that looks so nice, Swimpy, and very inviting - makes you want to hang
out in the bedroom all day (and night) long Wink you've got yourself a nice
playground there - well done!
