I am a martial art/martial arts instructor.

If I know only karate and teach this style of self-defence, which phrase should I use?

Thanks.

Thanks, Ceili.

I mean should it be 'martial art instructor' or 'martial arts instructor'? I know only karate but not other martial arts.

I disagree.
That is a misrepresentation,
unless he can show that he teaches more than one art.

@OmSigDAVID,

There's more than one art involved in karate.

@tanguatlay,
if you absolutely want to use the martial art/martial arts language, I'd suggest:

I teach Karate, which is a Martial Art.

Ceili's suggestion, from my perspective, is best.

I'd suggest:
Martial Arts instructor, certified in (type of ) Karate.

but that's a false representation,
if he only instructs ONE Martial Art

@tanguatlay,
One who teaches karate, even one style of karate is a martial arts instructor. Saying 'martial arts' doesn't suggest that the person teaches more than one type.

The vocation category is Martial Arts.

He could also say: I teach Language Arts, 8th grade literature.
