The sharpie stuff is pretty neat. I don't think I could have it as a mural in my home, the smell would give me headaches for weeks!

@Aldistar,
Sharpies do have a really foul smell. Probably its from the chemical solvents.

Today I was at a yard sale and bought a box of Sennelier Oil Pastels. It was a huge box of about 120 oil pastels and only one or two were even used. Apparently whoever got em as a gift didnt like oil pastels. The price was 5bucks and included the oak carrying case. Im gonna be dabbling in oil pastels for a while.

@farmerman,
I have been eyeing the oil pastel sets at work lately, myself. I haven't used them since high school, but I remember liking them quite a bit.

That is an awesome find for 5 bucks! I need to hit more garage sales around here. It's an artsy town and I may strike gold.

@Aldistar,
Cool kitty. Say, have you seen the new kinds of acrylics that appear like oils, are not so quick to skin over , and have a livelier surface look? I saw these in the new artists magazine

@farmerman,
Are those like Golden's new Open Acrylics? The only difference between them and Golden's Heavy Body and Fluid Acrylics is that they they take longer to get tacky and dry. I've bought a bunch of them but have yet to try them out.

@JLNobody,
American ARtist October 2010 issue, has an article re the "new" acrylics beginning on page 24. They mention the following brands
Chroma Atelier Interactive
Cryla Artists Acrylics
Da Vinci Fluid ACrylics
Liquitex Mediums
Old Holland New MAsters Classic ACrylics
Utrecht Artist ACrylics
Winsor and Newton Acrylics
Sennelier Artist Quality ACrylics

I havent tried any of them and I have very little experience with acrylics ever since I clogged up an airbrush with the damn things (they just dried too fast and formed an impermeable plastic membrane).
Course that was 25 years ago and I know theyve changed since then.

I have heard of the new acrylics but have yet to really read up on them or try them. I'm not sure if they will work right for me. I like acrylics because they dry so fast. I may not be patient enough if they get slower.

@Aldistar,
Yes, I have the same bias. I like to work fast--at least in the early "dionysian" phase of my painting--and I then work in small patches to tighten up my initial statements. I also like fluid acrylics for glazing. They dry fast so that I can put down layers on thoroughly dried layers while the spirit still moves me.

@JLNobody,
But if you are imbibing in your early stage acrylics painting, you are guilty of "drinking and drying"

@farmerman,
So, I have some crayons, 30 of them, that I've never just put in the goodwill bag.

Anyone want them?
Caran d'ache, neocolor II, what year, who knows, aquarelle, swiss made, tin box.
Could any of you use them? Extremely slightly used.

In my past, I gave some good stuff to my local art and engineering shop, and I know they found a good home for it all. Here in abq, I dunno.

@ossobuco,
Im not sure that I will even like the oil pastels I bought. SO, I thank you for the offer but perhaps someone else o the line can use them.
HAve you ever used crayons to act like dfrisket in watercolors? Its kind of neat when you use really light crayolas on wac paper. The white of the papaer shows through almost as densely as frisket but with not as much solid white. SOme color will stick onto the paper.

@farmerman,
No, I'm a watercolor fool..

I've done some, but more as if I were oil painting, devoid of wc technique.

I suppose I should track down the most local high school.

If they happen to teach art.

@ossobuco,
Yes, great idea Osso: give them to a public school art teacher, and save them the expense of buying materials out of their own pocket
BTW, I just had another painting accepted for a juried show. I was almost certain this one would not pass muster, not at all "pretty", mostly grey and titled "Inner City Life".

@JLNobody,
Good!

One or two of mine got picked for the local museum. Depends on the guest reviewer.

We had some strange reviews back in north north.

Do you remember, long ago on a2k, a fellow who was the intellectual persona of art? I knew him, as he came to our gallery several times. I liked him in person. I thought he was petunias on art, but that is much better than he thought of me.
What, way more intellectual than me.
I wonder how he is.

Oh, and I'll approach the local high school. Will report, not that my gift would be so much, but I'm looking into them as a possible place for my good art books.

@ossobuco,
Osso, I was surprised when I went to the opening night show and saw my greyish painting look much more colorful than I had expected--because they installed around it even duller works.

@JLNobody,
Congrats JL Was the opening well attended?

Itd be cool to have an art group (Robt is talking about "groups") and I thought that discussion and pix of our works and shows would be great ways to keep it fresh among the several of us who work in painting , photoraphy, sculpture, fibres etc. I know theytried it before but it was in a loose structure and a"chat room venue" The problem with chat rooms was that, any thing like a world wide board like we have means that AUstralians are awake when we are asleep, so the chat rooms are not inclusive, whereas a group would be.

Wow. Has it really been almost a year since this thread was updated? Let's see if we can revive it a bit. Is anyone up to any interesting projects?

I have one that I am almost (finally) done with, but I can't go into details since it is a surprise for someone who trolls here every now and again. I will post pics when it is no longer a secret. I can say it is a 20x30 canvas with acrylics. It is one of the biggest paintings I have ever done on canvas.

Anyone else?

Here is that commission I mentioned before. It turned into two so it took me awhile.

This is Lily, the great dane of one of my very good friends who is in culinary arts training (hence the chef hat). I thought of this originally as a house warming gift for her her and her girlfriend moving in together but then thought it would only be fair to give a portrait of her girlfriemnds doggie as well.

This is Miep, the dachsund. Her owner is a huge Batman and comic fan so in with the bat symbol. Also when Miep stands up her ears flop back and we all call her bat dog.

Lily is on 24x30 canvas while Miep is on 20x24. Both are done with acrylic paint.
