@spendius,
In 2008, 56.8% of those of us of voting age voted.
In 2004, it was 55.2%. 70% of registered voters went to the polls.
In 2000, 51.3% eligible to vote did so. 68% of registered voters showed up.

@reasoning logic,
It varies widely from year to year, election type to election type. But you can hardly blame the smart ones, RL - Gee, I get to vote for Tweedledumb or Tweedledumber.

Thank you for sharing and I agree but look what happened in the last election when people did not vote, we ended up with those who are even more psychopathic.

@reasoning logic,
There used to be an old saying used by brain dead folks - You better vote or the communists will get in.

Now it's You better vote or the Republicans will get in.

I hope that this is not what you think the brain dead folks are saying now because these are my thoughts as well.
Not that the Dems have done a better Job but because I still have hope. I would prefer an average Joe or Jane that make less than 100,000 per year in Washington and overseeing the courts and all local and state governments.

It seems to me that all of the people in office are working for corporations.
I would rather see people involved in voting regardless if the system is rigged, that way they will be more informed than if they were not involved. I do understand that this does not say much for some folks but at least they would be trying.

He was pointing to a trend of increasing voting, not decreasing.

@engineer,
How do the stats work out in the U.S. vs the U.K. re votes as a % of the adult population, Spendius? I think you are higher. But not by much.

@cicerone imposter,
I was about to doubt the veracity because it said Oz had had 14 elections between 1960 and 1995 (generally one every three years (with an extra double dissolution election chucked in in 1974) and the math didn't work - but hadn't realised that the Reps and Senate elections weren't held at the same time until the early 70s.

But, yay, we got gold, all stand for our national anthem.

@hingehead,
Are the roughly 5% who don't vote thrown into prison after each election, Hinge? It is a compulsory vote, isn't it?

@JTT,
Yep - it's compulsory voting, but not compulsory voter registration. There is a fine - but any half decent reason will get you out of it.

From the AEC site:
What happens if I do not vote?
Initially the Australian Electoral Commission will write to all apparent non-voters requesting that they either provide a reason for their failure to vote or pay a $20 penalty.

If, within 21 days, the apparent non-voter fails to reply, cannot provide a valid and sufficient reason or declines to pay the penalty, then prosecution proceedings may be instigated. If the matter is dealt with in court and the person is found guilty, he or she may be fined up to $50 plus court costs.

Polls on Sunday showed Romney pulling clear in the Sunshine State after his campaign team went on the offensive, unleashing blistering ads that painted Gingrich as unethical and not fit for office.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and millionaire venture capitalist considered the party establishment's favourite, was leading Gingrich by 15 points in Florida, 42 per cent to 27 per cent, according to an NBC/Marist poll.

A new Miami Herald poll showed Gingrich behind by 11 points.

Romney may be surging ahead but he starting to loose his smooth sailing look.

He definitely is looking a little crazy, fanatical, and extreme in that photo, Revelette...but this is a Republican Party candidate, and you cannot blame him for pandering to the party base!
