Good evening. It seems that many of you have been having fun here today and yesterday.
There will probably be another few polls in Florida ahead of Tuesday's primary.
Right now it appears that Romney is at around 39% vs 31% for Gingrich. Santorum is at 11% and Paul is at 10%.
It seems to me that Romney will win with a margin greater than the 8 points above given the early and absentee voting.
Gingrich today appealed to Santorum voters to back him, saying that Santorum is not going to win the nomination and Romney must be stopped. I doubt that that effort will have much effect this late.

@realjohnboy,
I'm not going to track the reference, but I saw an internet item saying Santorum had packed it in, and was going to rest and work on his taxes. Not sure both can be done in the same timeframe, but that was the headline. I didn't persue the article.

If you all would like to understand the reality of our economic and social system and have a better understanding about what you are voting for I would listen to someone who studies this more than most people do.
This person is some what of a comedian as well.

@roger,
Right, he's at home and just waiting to see what's happening in Florida. But he's not dropping out of the race entirely.

@Eva,
Oh yikes, that's new to me.

I saw the same (or similar) article as the one roger mentioned, they said he was tired and that he was unlikely to win in Florida, so was taking a break.

Here's more info about his daughter:

http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Santorum-Daughter-at-Childrens-Hospital-138285139.html

It does say, as of this article anyway, "Rick intends to return to Florida and resume the campaign schedule as soon as is possible.''

@sozobe,
Good morning. Politico reports now that Rick Santorum will not bother to return to Florida ahead of Tuesday's primary. He is heading for Nevada where there will be caucuses on Saturday, February 4th.
Nate Silver has an article out this morning on what the Repubs will be doing in February. It is on the NYT's website. Unfortunately, I have used up my 20 free links for January.
If anyone has the time to post some bullet points that would be great.

There's also a whole thing about Sarah Palin actively campaigning for Newt/ against Romney. Casting Newt as the Tea Party candidate and Romney as the Republican Establishment candidate. I hope that angle works. Not super-optimistic, but it'd be nice.

@roger,
Gingrich is different in many ways, but one of the main ones is that he is a much better known quantity than Obama was. People already have opinions about Gingrich in a way that "Barry who?" people did not in the 2008 Democratic primaries.

And those opinions are pretty damn low.

First result for "Newt Gingrich unfavorable":

http://campaign2012.washingtonexaminer.com/sites/default/files/styles/blog_listing_full/public/fav-carroll.jpg

Quote:
Unlike Mitt Romney, who occasionally beats President Obama in general election poll match ups, Newt Gingrich trails far behind President Obama in every survey. But just how bad are Gingrich's unfavorable among the general public compared to Obama and Romney?

Not every poll releases their full results, so here are the most recent favorability results I could find for Obama, Romney, and Newt.

Fox News, 1/12-1/14:
Obama, fav/unfav, 51%/46%, +5
Romney, fav/unfav, 45%/38%, +7
Gingrich, fav/unfav, 27%/56%, -29

CBS/NYT, 1/12-1/17:
Obama, fav/unfav, 38%/45%, -7
Romney, fav/unfav, 21%/35%, -14
Gingrich, fav/unfav, 17%/49%, -32

PPP, 1/13-1/17:
Obama, app/dis, 47%/50%, -3
Romney, fav/unfav, 35%/53%, -18
Gingrich, fav/unfav, 26%/60%, -34

America does not love Romney, but boy do they hate Newt.
