@Cycloptichorn,
As an aside, here in Virginia there is a debate about whether or not to allow people to bring registered handguns onto college campuses.
Several public universities, including VA Tech and UVA, are saying "no" while there are those in state government saying that the schools can't "opt out" of allowing guns.
Liberty University, a very conservative private school 70 miles south of me, is allowing students and staff to carry guns. There have been about 60 applications thus far, equally divided between students and staff. Guns may not be brought into buildings but can be kept in cars and worn in outdoor areas on the campus.

Newt had a town hall meeting today in Iowa. He was asked whether he would consider Sarah Palin as his running mate. He said "yes," of course and also said that she would make an excellent Secretary of Energy in his administration.
I normally don't bother reading the comments following an article. But I did run through about 50 of them and was surprised at the number of people who have high regard for her.

The Washington Post today asked several key 2012 hopefuls who had declined to run what the would be campaigning on. Following is the complete transcript of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s response:

Given the concerns I have for some of the Republican field’s focus thus far, I must implore the candidates to do something that sounds self-promoting, but whatever. Candidates, please turn to Chapter Three of “Going Rogue” and read what it takes for our country to step toward energy independence. Note the lesson I share in the same chapter about taking on the “elite,” the crony capitalists and the permanent political establishment to get a job done.

what a surprise. The North Star references energy in today's response to WaPo.

She couldn't be much worse that recent Secretaries of energy - going back to Hazel O'Leary in the mid 1990s right through to today's Steven Chu.

The DOE Renewable Energy laboratory in Gloden CO has been spending billions every year for decades and still hasn't produced anything but Solyndra.

EPA and the Administration are working hard to shutdown the 51% of our electrical power produced by coal, and, at the same time, make the extraction of our abundant natural gas far more difficult and expensive and stop pipelines and domestic fuel production. With what will we replace the 51% they will close down??? Wind and solar power represent less than 2% of our total and cost more than three times the amount for coal (or nuclear) to build and operate - per unit of power actually produced.

@Rockhead,
No. Only saying she would likely be a significant improvement over the norms for the past decades. I know the Department of Energy very well. It is a loose amalgum of warring bureaucratic tribes (renewable energy; nuclear weapons; energy production and distribution regulation; national laboratories; etc.), and thoroughly politicized. Happily the damage it does in limitied by the hapless incompetence of the organization (Solyndra was one of its better projects - many are worse.)

Gob can't endorse Mrs. Palin. He's one of the crony capitalists covered in Chapter 3 of her book.

I imagine the reason for that George is the think-tank's warnings of what 308 million Yanks will do with free energy.

In the first place energy isn't free here.

In the second, the "think tanks" to which you appear to be referring are a good deal more notable for their activities at rumor mongering and suppressing contrary data and the sources of it, than they are (so far) at real thinking.

You are merely more credulous than I, not more thoughtful.

@spendius,
For what it is worth: Ohio had a minor (4.0) earthquake this evening. No injuries and no damage. A bit of finger pointing, though, regarding whether the discharging of waste water (aka brine water) from the gas mining process known as "fracking" may have been a factor.
Fortunately, we here on A2K have a couple of people with backgrounds in mining who might be able to comment.

Meanwhile, the final poll on Iowa is out. Very close.
I am sticking with my prediction as to the order of finish: Paul, Romney, Santorum, Perry, Gingrich, Bachmann.
