Ok. I actually agree with Rick Perry about something.

Quote:
Texas Gov. Rick Perry called Monday for a new law that would see members of Congress jailed for insider trading.

Perry, in a web video posted Monday, seemed to trade off a "60 Minutes" report that aired Sunday evening, which accused leaders in Congress from both parties of possibly using privileged information to make smart stock picks.

"Any congressman or senator who uses their insider knowledge to profit in the stock market ought to be sent to jail, period," Perry said in a web video posted to his campaign's YouTube account. "And Congress ought to pass a law that says so, right now -- no if's, and's or but's."More

@JPB,
There's probably one ot two other things as well Smile

Insider trading by members of Congress is a disgrace. Maybe the 60 Minutes expose will help put an end to it. It's troubling that it has taken this long for anyone to expose the problem. I'm glad that CBS and 60 Minutes took it on, but once again they have evidenced their political bias.

While the lead character in the segment was Nancy Pelosi, all of the other 4 referenced members of congress were Republican.

Peter Schweizer, of the Hoover Institute (which as 60 Minutes was quick to point out is a "conservative" think tank) and his soon to be released book "Throw Them All Out," were prominently featured in the segment. I doubt they took any advice he may have offered as to who the worst offenders are.

SEE LINK FOR MORE DETAILED INFORMATION

Quote:
Yet a source that has seen an advanced copy of Schweizer's book says that 60 to 70 percent of the offenders named are Democrats.

As the author of the linked article notes, this is not a scandal that involves only Democrats, both parties are guilty, but 60 Minutes deliberately chose to profile 4 Republicans and only 1 Democrat.

They did so, I have to assume, to either suggest this is predominantly a Republican scandal or to make amends with their Democrat buddies for going after Pelosi.

While this scandal is being dealt with someone should take a look at what other laws Congress has exempted themselves from.

It is outrageous and a clear example of how corrupt our government has been

@Finn dAbuzz,
It is impossible to stop and it is bordering on the inhuman to resist. Anybody caught is guilty of stupidity.

You could elect saints or operate communism.

@spendius,
Nonsense.

Subjecting members of congress to insider trading laws would put a stop to it real quick.

Obviously no law can guarantee 100% compliance, but it will go a long way in curbing the practices

@Finn dAbuzz,
I'm just starting to read about all this, that this was ok for congress elects to do - and figure if there were misusages (how, if it was ok?) it would have been spread across the aisle.

Haven't checked your link yet.

Re other dispensations re congress, I agree that should be reviewed. By whom? There is a catch.

@ossobuco,
If sixty minutes aimed primarily at GOP folk when the offenses (which? haven't read enough yet) were relatively equal, then that is obvious slanting.

I suppose I have to read about all this.

@spendius,
It will in the most larcenous, but at least when they are caught they can be prosecuted. Now all that happens is they get put on the spot, and they spout bullshit.

Pelosi is a real piece of work. When 60 Minutes confronted her she got pissed off, but then she has long thought of herself as a member of the American aristocracy.

I got a robo-call before that was an opinion survey from USA Today/Gallup polls. After asking me whether I watched Dancing With The Stars Rolling Eyes, it shifted to whether I had a positive, negative, neutral, or no opinion, of Romney, Cain, Gingrich, or Obama. Then it asked who I would vote for if each of them were running against Obama, just Obama. Then Obama/Biden were matched against possible combos of the three Republicans, like Romney/Gingrich, and it asked who I would vote for, and then it matched an Obama/Hillary Clinton ticket against all possible combos of the three Republicans.

Apart from it's focus on only the three current leading Republicans, and their relative strengths as either Pres or VP candidates, I thought the choice of an Obama/Clinton match-up was interesting and indicates someone is putting out serious feelers on that one. Other recent polls have shown that putting Hillary on the ticket would give Obama his best shot at re-election. I know I'd be much more enthused if the ticket was Obama/Clinton.

What Dancing With The Stars has to do with any of it I have no idea--I never watch it,Laughing

Has anyone else gotten any political opinion calls lately?

@firefly,
The idea of an Obama/Hillary ticket has been drifting around for awhile. I may have written about it - or perhaps I meant to. She is getting weary of the travel and Biden, who has a good knowledge of foreign affairs might be willing to switch jobs. It would likely help Obama's chances in 2012.
I would disagree with the notion that she might have presidential ambitions in 2016 if the Dems win in 2012. She would be 70 years old and would step aside for the next generation.
We probably should talk about this on the Obama thread. See you there, I hope.
