Cats are incapable of feeling guilt.

David, do you know anything about cats?
Sounds like you got your knowledge from a Walt Disney cartoon.
Yes. I have hosted quite a few of them.

I lost the girl of my dreams, because I said that I like them.
She decided not to tolerate me.

I'm sure I've seen a guilty look flash across Possum's face occasionally.

It was fleeting, mind you....

He knows what the rules are - after all - he's the one who's trained me!

Do you ever wonder, roger, whether Reyn & Mrs Reyn might have superior cat training abilities to the likes of you & me?

Hmm, I don't think we necessarily have any better training abilities than anyone else, although we do try to be consistent.

I really feel that's it depends on the personality of each cat.

Kory (one of our beloved cats that died last year) had such a refined sense of guilt in a cat that I've honestly never seen before in a cat before. Kira (the other one that died) was quite the opposite and could be very defiant.

If Kory was chasing Kira and got overly rambuctious, all we would have to do it raise our voice a bit (call his name mainly) and he would almost instantly flop down where he was standing.

Our current cat, Sophie, is a bit different. While we got our last 2 cats as kittens, Sophie came into our home at 1 1/2 years old, and came with her own ideas. Generally, she is surprisingly good (she came from a shelter), but the kitchen table and counters are a constant challenge. She knows.... but does it anyways. Laughing

If she knows we're upset and I come after her to wag my finger and scold a little in a firm voice, often she'll roll over on her side. So, she's sorry, but will no doubt do it again! Laughing

@Reyn,
Now that you mention losing a cat, I have had a couple of very guilty cats commit road suicide... Why didn't they just try cat confession???

@Reyn,
Sorry isn't the same as feeling guilt. Still, glad Sophie is there for you.

@roger,
I've had several cats. Took a while to reflect back. Guilt? Nope. Sorry. Yes. That was usually because I was angry about something, and they wanted to be forgiven. I don't give out treats when I'm pissed.

weird, every cat i've ever known has spent most of its life trying to laze around on one quilt or another

have you tried washing it or using a different fabric softener

You're taking a very tough line in support of your "guilty" case, roger!

I can see you have very strong feelings about this. Wink

@roger,
BTW, what exactly did Nermal do that he feels no guilt for doing?

@djjd62,
What would fabric softener do? I could end up with a guiltless looking cat with soft fur, but how is that supposed to help?

Oh, Swimp! If I made a list, they'd gang up on me for being obsessive.

@roger,
Not true. My cat smacked my new puppy for biting her tail and then sheepishly followed it around when it ran off crying.

Ok, so maybe the cat was stalking Stewie, as he was not much larger than a rodent at that time, but she did look distressed at the theatrics Stewie put on and she has shown more restraint since only needing to raise her pimp paw in the subsequent "no bite? no smack?" truce that followed.

Took my kids to school this morning and when I got back home my 2 lil felines were on the stove! Max (the youngest) took off running like something was chasing him! He knew he did wrong! LOL Tried to shove his fat self behind the couch!

Ah, but fear is not the same as guilt.
