Members of the radical group Westboro Baptist Church picketed at Woodbridge High School this morning, but they were outnumbered.

Prince William police say five people from the extremist Kansas-based group showed up for the 7 a.m. protest. At least 200 counter-protesters were there, too.

The counter-protesters carried signs bearing positive messages and sung "God Bless America."

Traffic backed up on Old Bridge Road during the spectacle. Some motorists honked and yelled out the windows.

The Westboro group -- known for its anti-gay sentiments and picketing military funerals --planned to head over to the Coast Guard recruiting station by Potomac Mills Mall for another protest this morning. A counter-protest was planned there, too, spearheaded by the brother of a soldier killed in Iraq.

That protest didn't materialize, but many anti-Westboro picketers rallied along Smoketown Road near Prince William Parkway.

Westboro protesters face jeers and slashed tires

McALESTER - Members of a Kansas church that protests at military funerals may have found themselves in the wrong town Saturday.

Shortly after finishing their protest at the funeral of Army Sgt. Jason James McCluskey of McAlester, a half-dozen protesters from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., headed to their minivan, only to discover that its front and rear passenger-side tires had been slashed.

To make matters worse, as their minivan slowly hobbled away on two flat tires, with a McAlester police car following behind, the protesters were unable to find anyone in town who would repair their vehicle, according to police.

The minivan finally pulled over several blocks away in a shopping center parking lot, where AAA was called. A flatbed service truck arrived and loaded up the minivan. Assistant Police Chief Darrell Miller said the minivan was taken to Walmart for repairs.

Even before the protesters discovered their damaged tires, they faced off with a massive crowd of jeering and taunting counterprotesters at Third Street and Washington Avenue, two blocks from the First Baptist Church, where the soldier's funeral was held.

Miller estimated that crowd to number nearly 1,000 people, and they not only drowned out the
Westboro protesters with jeers, but with raucous chants of "USA, USA."

A few motorcyclists interspersed among the crowd also revved up their engines to muffle the protests.

More than two dozen law-enforcement officers - state troopers, sheriff's deputies and city police - formed a security cordon around the Westboro protesters.

"We're here to protect everyone," Miller said.

Westboro members picket military funerals across the country, spreading their message that "God hates America" because it tolerates homosexuality.

I'm having a little trouble understanding this.
What I'm interested to know is why the protest at a school?
And have I got this right?: The Westborough folk showed up for a 7 am protest. So they instigated the protest? What were they protesting about at a school?

I know about the Westboro Baptist Church, so don't need any extra information about who they are and what they stand for .

Please excuse me if I've missed something, but I'm having a bit of trouble understanding what this is all about.

@msolga,
Found this article that gives some further background:

http://woodbridge-va.patch.com/articles/extremist-westboro-baptist-church-to-protest-at-two-woodbridge-locations

Excerpt:

Quote:
Fred Phelps' extremist Westboro Baptist Church from Topeka, KS, plans to picket outside of Woodbridge Senior High School and the Coast Guard Recruiting Center in Woodbridge on Monday, Nov. 15.

According to the church's website, the two locations are on the church's picketing schedule for 7 to 7:30 a.m at WSHS and from 8 to 8:30 a.m. at the recruiting center Monday morning before moving onto a law enforcement facility in Delaware later in the afternoon.

The church was unavailable for comment but claims on its website that they are protesting at the school because of "the students, parents and teachers at Woodbridge High School who live in rebellion against their creator every minute." The church also claims that the recruiting center—the site of a vandalism shooting incident in a string of four others—encourages "young men and women to fight for a nation who has made God her #1 Enemy!"

The secretary at Woodbridge Senior High School said that the school is asking people to "just ignore them" come Monday morning.

First Sgt. Ruben Castilla of the Prince William County police told Woodbridge Patch that both locations are private properties and that the protesters will not be allowed to cross onto school property. As for the shopping center where the Coast Guard Recruiting Center is, near Potomac Mills, that is also private property but it is up to the owners to make the final call on the protesters.

Erin Middlebrooks, a parent of a Woodbridge Senior High School student, said she was contemplating bringing her daughter into school later in the morning just to avoid the scene altogether. "It is just ridiculous and if I keep my daughter home it will be because I don't want to take the chance of putting her in the middle of something that could turn ugly and get violent," she said via email.

Middlebrooks said when she called WSHS on Tuesday, a school official said they anticipate that Principal David Huckestein will send home an informative letter addressing Monday's protest.

"I am just blown away that they have chosen a public school as their choice of place to protest," Middlebrooks said. "It is ridiculous to think they will get very far in this forum."

Westboro Baptist Church was established in 1955 and is known for carrying signs stating "God Hates Fags," "Thank God for AIDS" and "God Is Not Mocked."

Woodbridge Senior High alumni will be holding a counter-protest, at the same day and time, according to the Facebook group "Fight Back Against Westboro Baptist Church" and is apparently being planned by WSHS alumnus Katy Chmura.

Recently the church faced a Supreme Court Case in Snyder v. Phelps after members of Westboro Baptist Church protested at the funeral of Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder. Snyder's family pressed charges against the church claiming invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

There's also a video with one of the WBC folks saying that basically, the reason they are there is for PR.

Here's the video:

My goodness!
No wonder they were protesting! Razz

Thank you, Butrflynet.
I'd actually Googled a bit & was unable to find a clear explanation.
Not that this explains all, exactly! Wink
