He was pretty good until he decided he needed to include four letter words. That dropped him into the second division.

we used to get Dave Allen at Large (i think that's what it was called) here in Canada in the 70's, definitely a good show and a funny man, but not my vote for best stand up, that would go to Bill Hicks
One thing about dave, I think he was, out there, ahead of his time , taking on the church at a time when the church still had real power. Where as, todays comedians can literally get away with anything. Thats why i'd vote for Dave.
i definitely give him props for taking on the church at the time he did, especially in Ireland, where its influence was still very strong, likely still is today
Oh no my friend, after all the **** that went on over here with the church, their support and influence has collapsed, except off course for the die hards, but no doubt they will worm back in again and prey on peoples fears and hopes.

I would say Bob Hope was the most successful comedian provided you didn't mind his Nixonian ski nose.
