Rog, I realize that, but I was just making a point in response to cjhsa's remark about the fact that shots don't cause the flu. In my case, that vaccine CAUSED me to get sick...and I mean

SICK

I often wonder if false demands are created, somehow, by those who might benefit in one way or another...and yes, I'm paranoid--a marvelous defense mechanism, incidentally Laughing

No thanks. Like I said. I'll take my chances and practice good preventive measures. As many times as I got shots and got violently sick afterwards, I'm more then willing to risk it.

I already know I am very allergic to the polio vaccine. It wouldn't surprise me at all to find that there is something in the flu shots that I am also allergic to.

Maybe it's the egg and feather thing they asked me about.

Polio! Just the word freezes my attention for a few seconds. Fortunately, in the US there is sort of a herd immunity at work. If everyone around us is immune, it's okay if each individual is not. This is not true over the entire world, of course. The disease has definately not been defeated.

The Americas region, and many other countries including Europe, are recognised to be free of polio as a disease. However, with the extent of international travel, it is important for people to remain immune, to prevent it spreading and causing an epidemic.

I have never had a flu shot. i rarely get sick. I thought I was coming down with the flu two days ago. I felt like it had hit me like a train, but the next day I just had a regular cold.

Good morning, all. I still feel that it has to do with the immune system. Rather than depend upon a cure, we need to concentrate on prevention. To me, the best way to do that is to live with a little dirt and germs. Our preoccupation with sanitizing everything has debilitated that "warrior" in our bodies.

VERY high fever, vomiting, malaise, etc.),

Soz, those are the exact symptoms that we are told to be aware of if we think it might be the flu, although high fever isn't necessarily one of the most important symptoms--the vomiting is the most dangerous because of the risk of dehydration.

Here in Colorado people are being asked not to get a flu shot unless they are in a high risk group, in order to keep enough in stock.

Dys and I are both getting over bad colds, but I really don't think we had the flu--we weren't knocked over the head the way you usually are when the flu strikes.

Everybody keep well and keep thinking of Christmas in New Orleans.

Diane, Ha! that is soooo funny.

Hope you and Dys are feeling better by now.

I get flu shots every year without any bad reaction and I don't get the flu.

My children are another story. They have reactions to vacinations, period.
My son gets the flu with respiratory complications at least once every year.

I wish they could find a new base for vacines that won't cause allergic reactions. Wouldn't that be a better goal for the drug industry than their R and D for tweaked designer drugs that make up their media advertising?

Very Happy Smile Laughing

Di, I heard many variations of The Twelve Days of Christmas, but that's my favorite.

and here's a tune by a group called GERMS:
Media Blitz

I've got television
I've got supervision
No decisons for you
Media blitz, media Blitz
Immediate hits, we rule

Don't steal your eyes off the TV screen
Can you realize we're what we've seen
Take an injection from the mad machine

Don't read the papers read between the lines
We're vision rapers and we seed the signs
You'll play your part in the master mind

We feed the science
We deal in riots
We play by ideal time
We're a gov'ment fix
All social convicts
Watch the idle rhymes

[Chorus]

Bleed your heart out-that's all it's worth
Before you ever start-we planned it first
Forget the truth-accept your curse

Good grief. I thought I'd heard 'em all. Shocked

anyone who thinks that "we have a preoccupation with sanitizing" might want to take a good look at the website re. SPANISH FLU - not pretty ! as far as getting sick from the flushot is concerned, it is quite possible to pick up the bug from someone sick showing up at a clinic. we get our flu shot early in the season before it spreads in the community. of course there is no 100% guarantee that one might not still get the flu; i believe that is true with any vaccination. a canadian doctor who was involved in battling the SARS outbreak (dr. low - i believe) recommends to go on KETEK for 5 days IMMEDIATELY when you are hit by the flu to prevent pneumonia; which i understand is a fairly serious byproduct of this year's flu virus. anyone allergic to EGG should not have a flu shot because the virus vaccine is developed using chicken eggs - i'm sure that's well known already. we had our shots in october as soon as the vaccine was available. hbg ... here is the website on the spanish flu - HAPPY READING : www.ninthday.com/spanish_flu.htm

roger wrote : " Fortunately, in the US there is sort of a herd immunity at work. If everyone around us is immune, it's okay if each individual is not.". this is an interesting point, roger. here in canada, the medical communicable disease specialists actually hope that a sort of "herd immunity" might work; that assumes that enough people get vaccinated to create some barriers within each community and prevent a kind of wildfire spread of the 'flu. in ontario flu-shots are available to anyone free of charge this year and the participation rate has apparently increased greatly. of course, with the SARS outbreak in toronto/ontario earlier this year many people have become more aware of the seriousness of widespread epedemic. some medical specialist that have been interviewed feel that even though no one is sure at this time whether there might be another SARS outbreak soon, a widespread vaccination against the 'flu might dull a possible SARS outbreak. apparently the virus strains of SARS/'flu are somewhat similar and the hope is that the 'flu-vaccine will offer some protection in case of a possible SARS outbreak. the study of the SARS virus will apparently take some time to complete (months, if not years); so the hope is that 'flu-vaccination will serve as a kind of barrier. one thing is for sure, in ontario/canada the medical community is quite concerned of a serious 'flu outbreak this winter and is urging people to GET THE NEEDLE ! hbg

hamburger, There is a nasal spray available for those who can't get the shot in the arm. When I had chronic sinusitis years ago, my doctor gave me a nasal antibiotic. I have never had one problem with it since. Trouble is, the AMA decided that it was worthless....another misdirection.

Well, even if it is wishful thinking to hope that a flu shot will give some protection from SARS, it might help in early diagnosis. The early symptoms are similar, and anyone developing them and coming down with symptoms might seek attention sooner than otherwise.

anyone who does not like THE NEEDLE but would still like to get some protection against the flu might want to consider one of the "antiviral drugs" available; see >>> www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/flu/fluviral.htm hbg.

About 10 years since I had 'flu. The "jags" here aren't across the board.
All the elderly and all others at risk if contacting 'flu get them. Our son who is coming 17 was offered one this year because he was slight asthmatic when a child. He is clear now and didn't go for jag.

Hey, Irish, glad you're back. I'm assuming that "jags" is the flu shot. Very Happy
A lot of children who have asthma later out grow it, but I can understand why your son would qualify for the shot.

Thanks, hamburger for all your info. Peter Jennings has had a brief report each night on the flu. and it seems that at this point, it is no worse than any other year. Since viruses mutate, one never knows what strain is floating around out there.

Good morning, all.

Sorry to others for going off topic. Sad
