@izzythepush,
We also prosecute people for sexual assaults which occurred long ago. As usual, Hawkeye and BillRM are uninformed, in large measure because they avoid looking at, or dealing with, the actual sexual assault cases in the news.
Often, those abused when they were children don't have the courage to come forward until they are adults, or they fear not being believed.

This case is currently in the news, and they are still seeking more possible victims.

Former Walter Reed Army Medical Ctr. pediatrician charged with sexual abuse of children
By ABC7 News,

April 28, 2014 -

SILVER SPRING, Md. (WJLA) - An 83-year-old former pediatrician, Leslie Boyd Altstatt of Silver Spring, has been arrested and charged with numerous sexual offenses and acts of child abuse.

Altstatt was employed as a pediatrician and researcher at the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center, when it was located at 6900 Georgia Avenue NW in D.C., from the mid-1960s until the early 1980s.

Police said Monday that three adult women reported being sexually abused as children. The reports were filed in February of this year, and officials said a subsequent investigation indicated that Altstatt committed sexual offenses and acts against the three victims between 1964 and 1996.

One of the three victims said she was abused by Altstatt hundreds of times between the ages of 6 to 15. All three were reportedly related to Altstatt, who has since been released on bond, but is charged with with five counts of committing a third-degree sex offense, child abuse, and six counts of committing an unnatural and perverted sex practice.

Sharon Kornely lived across the street from Leslie Altstatt for decades, and she is shocked:

"He's not somebody you would consider a predator, that you'd be afraid to have in your family," she said.

"I am utterly appalled and shocked by the inhumane treatment by the Montgomery County Police of my client," said Altstatt's attorney, Richard Finci.

Finci added that his client's health is not the best, that the accusations are "ancient," and that Altstatt is in home hospice care, needing oxygen tanks to be able to breathe; tubes are visible in his mug shot.

Daisy Ramos, who has also been a neighbor of Altstatt for 14 years, tells ABC 7 that she can't believe he's facing these charges (in Spanish):

"I have lived here a long time and he has always seemed very respectful, very friendly."

A police document reportedly states that Altstatt admitted the allegations were true, but Finci counters:

"I am unaware of any admissions of any nature...He will certainly plead not guilty when the opportunity presents itself."

Police said Monday that because of Altstatt's position as a pediatrician and his access to children, detectives are concerned that there may be additional victims.

But Finci insists he never was a child doctor there, only a researcher.

Anyone who feels that he or she may have been victimized by Altstatt is asked to contact the Family Crimes Division at 240-773-5400.

That's good to hear. Incidently, despite BillRM's clear confusion, we don't renact retrospective laws. That was the thing about Clifford, if he had done exactly the same things today he'd be serving life, not eight years, only four of which will probably be served.

@izzythepush,
This man, on your side of the pond, did get a stiffer sentence on crimes of sexual assault committed decades ago. The mere passage of time doesn't diminish the severity of the crime, and it's good to know they can still obtain convictions despite the passage of time.

Rapist jailed for attacking teen on his wedding night while his new bride slept in next room
Apr 30, 2014
By Jessica Best

A man has been jailed for raping two young girls during the 1970s - one of whom he attacked on his wedding night as his new bride slept in the next room.

William Jordan, 59, of Greyhound Road, west London, was handed an 18 year jail sentence at the Old Bailey after being found guilty of that rape, as well as repeatedly raping his family's babysitter, Scotland Yard said.

The court heard how Jordan raped a 14-year-old girl after his own wedding reception in 1973, as the teen slept in a bed in the home of a family friend.

Jordan attacked her as his new wife slept next door.

The victim did not tell anyone about this attack until 40 years later, when she was contacted by police investigating linked historic abuse.

Police gained her confidence and she provided a compelling account of the abuse received at the hands of Jordan, police said.

His second victim, an 11-year-old girl, worked as a babysitter in Jordan's house in Hammersmith between 1977 and 1979.

After about an hour, Jordan would return from the pub and if the children were asleep, he would rape her.

He would then leave to return to his wife.

Police said this happened on more than one occasion whenever she babysat.

Detective Inspector Tim Wilkinson from the Met's Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, said: "This conviction sends out a very strong and positive message to Londoners that those who commit serious offences will be brought to justice without the passing of time being a barrier.

"I would like to pay tribute to the bravery of the victims who found the strength to give evidence in court. We know that only a proportion of rape victims report to police, I hope that this conviction encourages other victims of rape to come forward."

Those who work in the system justify overcharging to themselves by knowing that it works to get them what they want, and they justify it to the rest of us by saying the word "SAFETY!".

Yes, safety is definitely a concern when it comes to getting rapists convicted and putting them where they no longer endanger the community--because we are dealing with crimes involving the assault of others. And those who work in the system bring charges appropriate to the crimes--your assertion of "overcharging" is mostly subjective, and in your own mind, because you habitually downplay the nature and severity of sexual assaults, and you disregard the fact that a judge must find evidence to substantiate the charges. Due process is not denied to those charged with crimes of sexual assault, despite all of the hot air you spew to the contrary.

Safety is definitely a consideration, or should be, when sentences are handed down for crimes of sexual assault. Certainly, a very elderly woman should be able to sleep in her bed without fear of being raped, just as a young woman should be able to get drunk and pass out without fear of being raped. In neither of those instances is the woman asking to be raped simply because she is vulnerable. And, if rapists are not apprehended, or if punishments are not adequate, the deterrents to such crimes are inadequate and ineffective.

In this case, the judge felt it appropriate to hand down the maximum sentence...

Formal charges filed against teen in rape of Anderson woman, 93

ANDERSON – Police announced formal charges against a 17-year-old suspect in connection with the July rape of a 93-year-old Anderson woman.

According to Anderson Police Chief Larry Crenshaw, the suspect lived closed to the victim. Crenshaw said police collected DNA samples from several people and connected the suspect to the crime through a DNA match.

Charges against Iquise V. Taylor include rape, burglary, criminal confinement and strangulation police announced during a news conference Monday. He’s been charged as an adult.

Crenshaw called it a “horrific and unimaginable attack” and said the department was satisfied to bring some kind of closure to Amelia Rudolf and her family. He said he’d met with Rudolf and told her the department would “bring justice in this life or the next.”

Crenshaw said the teen lived close to the victim but didn’t know if Rudolf was specifically targeted.

The victim’s daughter described her mother as “brave” and “strong” and described her as a hero.

“The fact that the Anderson Police Department caught the criminal (that) he will be off the streets… that’s one less criminal because of her surviving and enduring that,” said Tresa Hale. “He won’t be able to hurt anyone else.”

Hale said the teenage suspect would eventually face punishment for the crime.

“Judgment Day will come for him,” she said. “I know in my heart that if he lived life in prison that it will be terrifying for him.”

Amelia Rudolf also spoke.

“If it wasn’t for the police department, I don’t know what I would’ve done,” she said. “I didn’t think I’d live long enough to see who did it.”...

Fortunately, Amelia Rudolf did live to see her rapist brought to justice--and sentenced for his crime.

Teen gets 50 years for rape of elderly woman
May 6, 2014,

ANDERSON, Ind. – An Anderson teenager was sentenced to 50 years in prison for raping an elderly woman last summer.

Iquise Taylor pleaded guilty last month to burglary, criminal deviate conduct, criminal confinement and strangulation. A Madison County judge gave him the maximum sentence Monday.

In July 2013, Taylor—then 17 years old—broke into the home of 93-year-old Amelia Rudolf and sexually assaulted her. He was charged as an adult.

FOX59 does not typically identify rape victims, but Rudolf chose to share her story and said she didn’t think she’d live long enough to find closure.

A DNA match led investigators to Taylor.

Suspect Arrested In Attack Of Elderly Woman
April 30, 2014

Baltimore County Police have arrested Paul Earnest Howard, the man wanted for attacking a 98-year-old woman in her home on Saturday evening.

Police say they received a tip that Howard was in Baltimore City, and he was arrested there Wednesday morning...

According to police, Howard knocked on the back door of a home in the 200 block of Gaywood Road and told the victim he was selling home improvement services.

The victim told the man that she already had someone handling repairs for her and the suspect left.

Several hours later, investigators say the man returned and asked to come inside the woman's home. When the victim asked the man when he was going to leave, he thew her to the ground, according to police.

"The investigation into this incident has indicated that the suspect attempted to rape the victim while he was in her home," Baltimore County Police said in a statement...

Man charged with attempted rape of elderly Rodgers Forge woman taken into custody
By Jessica Anderson, The Baltimore Sun
April 30, 2014

A man accused of attempted rape of a 98-year-old woman in her Rodgers Forge home was arrested Wednesday morning, Baltimore County police said.

Tips led county police to Baltimore City where they arrested 50-year-old Paul Earnest Howard Jr. in connection with the April 26 assault. He was questioned by detectives and is scheduled to have a bail hearing Wednesday.

Firefighters had found the victim lying on the floor inside her home in the 200 block of Gaywood Road shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday after receiving a medical alert call. She told police she had been thrown to the ground by a man claiming to be selling home-improvement services, whom police later determined to be Howard.

Howard, who has no fixed addressed listed, is charged attempted first-degree rape, third-degree sex offense, first-degree assault and theft less than $110.

Whether we're talking about women in their early 20's or in their 90's, and whether the women are vulnerable because of intoxication or advanced age, we are still talking about the same crime of sexual assault/rape--and the same mentality on the part of the rapist who chooses to physically violate/sexually assault someone who is vulnerable. Rape is quite often an opportunistic crime.

@firefly,
So we are supposed to believe that a 100 year old woman beat off a 50 year old man ? Doubtful. The fact that she was not raped pretty conclusively indicates that her attacker had no intent to rape. This case is probably part of the norm of over charging, the prosecutor saying " he accidently touched her breast as he pushed her to the ground, now we can call it attempted rape!"

No, it means that a rape was attempted but not completed. Your conclusion is just plain idiotic. And an attempted rape is a crime, a serious crime. And when the victim is 98, it's a particularly heinous crime.

And the charge is likely based on the victim's description of what the man did to her.

Now you want even 98 year olds to show evidence of completed rapes before you'll trust their credibility about what took place?

You seem to have a total lack of concern for the fact that such elderly women are being sexually assaulted, and sexually threatened, in their own homes. And, currently, there are other such crimes of sexual assault of the elderly in the news...

Trial to begin for man accused of second rape of an elderly womanApril 14, 2014
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – It is the kind of random act of brutality that

nightmares are made of. Now, a jury will decide if a 30-year-old man is responsible for the rape and brutal beating of a 77-year-old woman.

Shane Chambers faces life in prison if convicted of first-degree criminal-sexual conduct, home invasion and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder in the Sept. 19 attack of the elderly woman as she slept on the couch of the Worden Street SE home where she has lived for more than 50 years.

A jury is expected to be seated Monday, April 14 in the case, with testimony to begin on Wednesday.

Police say the woman was awakened by a man who was savagely beating her - a beating that resulted in her lapsing into unconsciousness for several hours.

She awoke to find that her underwear had been removed. Police tests revealed that she had likely been sexually assaulted....

A decade ago, Chambers was convicted in Macomb County of the rape of a 63-year-old Warren woman. Chambers was sentenced in March 2004 to eight to 20 years in prison and was paroled in June of 2012.

Police: Home invasion suspect threatened to rape, shoot elderly woman
Apr 23 2014

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Police in Jacksonville have arrested a 29-year-old man who they said broke into an elderly woman's home, demanded money and threatened to rape and shoot her.

Police said Christopher Watts shattered the window of a home in the area of Plymouth Street and Lake Shore Boulevard on the Westside at about 4 a.m. April 15.

Investigators said Watts entered the home and walked toward the victim with a sawed-off shotgun.

Watts demanded money, the rings off the woman's hands, and jewelry, police said. They said he also took her hearing aids and then made her remove her clothing and made several threats to rape her.

Watts made the victim lie on the floor and threatened to shoot her if she didn't comply with his demands, police said.

Investigators said the man is a stranger to the victim.

Watts was charged with attempted armed sexual battery and armed burglary.

Your attempts to deny the reality of sexual assault crimes are simply more hot air--you can't deal with the reality of rape, you look for ways to excuse or minimize the actions of sexual offenders, and you puff yourself up with outrage when the justice system charges and attempts to convict these criminals. Had you any real interest in "justice", you'd also want to see it done for the victims of these crimes--you'd want to see sexual offenders held accountable for their actions. You make it abundantly clear you don't give a damn for the victims, or for real justice.

Burton teen gets prison for bank robbery that linked him to elderly woman's rape
April 08, 2014

FLINT, MI -- A Burton teen will go to prison for a bank robbery that helped authorities link him to a brutal rape and robbery of an elderly Flint woman.

Denzel Berry was sentenced Tuesday, April 8, by Genesee Circuit Judge Joseph J. Farah to 15-30 years in prison after he pleaded no contest to armed robbery for robbing the Citizen's Bank branch on Pierson Road near Elms Road around 9:30 a.m. Oct. 30, 2012...

Berry was sentenced Feb. 18 by Farah to 23-50 years in prison for two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and a consecutive sentence of 10-20 years in prison for first-degree home invasion for an Oct. 15, 2012, attack where he sexually assaulted and robbed a then-87-year-old Flint woman as she carried groceries into her home.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has said that Berry agreed to provide authorities with a DNA sample after he was taken into custody for the bank robbery and it was that sample that authorities used to connect him to the sexual assault.

State law allowed Farah to sentence Berry consecutively for the home invasion, meaning the teen could spend as many as 70 years behind bars for the attack.

Authorities said the victim was beaten, raped and robbed as she was bringing in groceries from outside her home near Bradley Avenue and Reynolds Street. The assault happened around noon.

Prosecutors claimed Berry attacked the woman from behind, knocking her to the ground. He then sexually assaulted her, took money from her purse and jewelry from inside the house before fleeing.

This rapist had told the 87 year old he would kill her if she fought back.

23-50 years in prison, for the rape of an 87 year old, is hardly too harsh a sentence. This is the sort of person who needs to be removed from society. Thank goodness that the DNA sample, taken for an unrelated crime, enabled him to be identified, charged, and convicted of that rape.

Yes sir I have had many models looking to fall down and spread their legs for me over the decades to get their dreams of fame to come true.

Silly rabbit and the issue was not the statute of limitations although that is a concern but going back and changing the laws so there would be more punishments then existing at the time the suppose crimes happen as you stated you wish would had happen in this case.

Lot of things smell of high heaven about this case such as the police searching for women who would claimed that a crime had indeed happen decades ago.

A judge taking into account a claimed crime that he was never charge with let alone convicted of in another country in sentencing him.

The likelihood that he could had been subject to this kind of prosecution under the US legal system seem remote.

No, I believe he would be similarly prosecuted in the U.S., and I already posted current cases to illustrate that people here are, in fact, charged with, and prosecuted for, crimes of sexual assault which took place decades ago. And our police and prosecutors also search for other possible victims because those who commit sexual assaults tend to repeat these types of crimes. Knowing another complainant has come forward, and was listened to, often helps to empower others to report their sexual assaults, and to be willing to testify, even decades later.

What really seems to bother you about this man's conviction is that his victims were listened to, taken seriously, found credible, and they were believed. And now he is being made to pay for his crimes against them.

You just hate to see sexual predators have to face the consequences of their actions.

As much as I hate to say it, I have to agree with Bill.
While I do believe sexual predators should be prosecuted, I do have a problem with prosecuting someone for a crime they might have convicted years earlier.

It does seem to me, that in the cases you mentioned Izzy the police are looking for victims for something that MIGHT have happened years ago, and if I am reading correctly, may not have been a crime when they occurred.

As far as I can gather from the story the women did not go to the police the police when on a hunting trip looking for women that would claimed the he did criminal misdeeds to them decades ago!!!!!!

How many women did the police need to interview before they found a few that would give the police what they was looking for?

Seem a process that would likely results in charges no matter if the man is innocent or guilty.

Then there is the little matter that you are greatly handicap in defending yourself from charges decades old.

Records and other evidences that might prove such charges are false are long gone.

No I do not get upset when criminals are found guilty of their crimes I do get annoy when the process used seem all to likely to find someone guilty of a crime no matter if they are or are not guilty of a crime.

It also seems more then odd that the government could not find any victims that did not date back decades if he was a sexual predator he just stop being one two decades ago??????????????
