For people who live outside the United States nothing could be more entirely baffling that the emergence of what seems not just a very extreme right-wing movement but a mad movement, composed of people who believe in literal truth the Books of Genesis and Revelation though they seem not to have read the Bible, and tell monstrous and wicked lies about, for instance, our deeply loved National Health Service, of which they pretend to be both totally ignorant AND informed. Could some American explain? Is it just that they aren't educated enough not to know Fox News consists mainly of lies, for instance? Is it because they are insane racists that they have these fantasies about your President having been born in some other country? Is it because US politics are totally controlled by the rich that they seem to think what normal governments do everywhere is 'socialism', or is it just that decent people were so traumatised back in the days of McCarthy that their descendants are afraid to tell the truth? Why do they distrust others so much that they more or less insist on arming every criminal and madman so that they themselves can play cowboys? Do they want to have the highest murder rate in the world? Why do they imprison so many people (I'm bothered about this because our Petains are imitating them)? Why do they keep attacking Muslim countries even when they don't have oil?

I'd be grateful if some Americans could explain these things, which, from over here, seem bizarre in the extreme. I've scarcely ever met an American I disliked, but it would seem that, when they go home, they begin barking, howling at the moon, believing in insane conspiracies and shooting people. Or am I reading the wrong newspapers?

If your question is why are there so many crazy Americans, then I think that is because of cultural isolation. There are huge segments of the US population that see little or nothing of the outside world. Most of them live in rural areas surrounded mostly by like-minded people and often their only connection to the world at large is through news networks like FOX. Even our education system teaches little to nothing of other countries or religions.

Welcome to the club of states who don't turn their back on the sick and the poor....The very fact that there should have been such a violent debate simply on the fact that the poorest of Americans should not be left out in the streets without a cent to look after them ... is something astonishing to us.
