Well, there was a study (can't remember the details) that pretty much said that the Earth could cope even if the population doubled. So I think we're safe for a long time.
Here's the basic logic behind it: fetus=human, animal=animal. We've been eating animals for as long as we've been alive. It's what nature intended for us as omnivores.
