no they where Iraqi's, mostly in Baghdad. In fact a good friend of mine tells a story about a 6 hour gun battle they had with insurgents. When it was over a local citizen came out of his house (which was riddled with bullet holes from the fighting) and invited them in for something to drink.
a large portion of the Iraqi's don't want us there, but they don't want us to leave either. They understand that we're still necessary for the time being, and according to some estimates the insurgency will continue for another 5 years.
I think Lieberman has it right, we need to cut off the funding (2 million/month by his estimates) and training camps in Iran and Syria and Iraq will stabilize.
