I have in my time had various parts of my anatomy pierced.
What is it about piercing we find so telling uniquely about ourselves?
What are we trying to tell the world about ourselves with the addition of scars and metal?
Why do we think poking holes in our flesh is beautiful?
Are you stronger the more daring the piercing?
Do you think it an occupation of youth?
Do you think it is beautiful?
What does it prove?
What piercings do you find offensive or just plain old ugly?
Are you with your piercings trying to show a strength or daring?
What does a piece of jewellery say about you?
What would you like or dislike you or your partner to have pierced?
Do you find it alluring or attractive?
What have you had pierced and why did you have it done?
Psychologically strong or psychologically weak?
Physically strong or physically weak?
Is it a self strengthening?
Is it a self abusing?
What are your first impressions of a pierced person?
Are they you stigmatised or idolised?

Thanks for your time.

@sometime sun,
I used to think that piercings were more daring than tattoos, but then I realized that tattoos are mostly forever, piercings mostly can be taken out and the holes go away.

I dont like most piercings that I see. A small one in the nose is OK. I often like the look to tongue, nipple and genital piercings on women, and while my wife and I talk about her doing the last two I wonder if I would like them long term.

The worst I have seen personally is spikes in the head. Yuk. Huge ear plugs gross me out too.

@hawkeye10,
Hi Sun!

I think they are disgusting! Completely disgusting - As is any form of self-mutilation.

Have a lovely day!

As with everything, there is a whole spectrum out there. Some are a show of strength, some of weakness. I like small decent piercings - side of a nose, South-Indian style, I like an eyebrow piercing if it's small.

I don't mind most piercings actually, though I would not want more than I have (nose and few extra holes in my ears that I mostly don't use). I have a student with rather extreme face and ears piercings, it was something I paid attention to first five minutes, but she's smart and well spoken....I forget they're there. I figure everyone has their reasons for such self-expression. If I want to understand, I ask and people usually tell you the story/meaning behind it.

@hawkeye10,
Yes I dislike the ear plugs also.

When I was an atheist I thought about getting the head spikes, two screws on either side of my forehead that I could screw on those horns you see people wear.
But then I used to hang around with unfortunate people who wore shirts that had emblazoned "Jesus is a c**t" on them.

Thank God I grew out of it.

(I am not saying decent atheists or people do such things)

@mark noble,
All piercings?

I am not defending myself against this, but I grew out of mine, I now only wear two silver hoops in my left upper ear.

Although I do still keep the hole of one I had on my face open as I still find it quite romantic and dare I say beautiful,
even if I only wear it maybe twice a year at home for about an hour.
But I also stopped using mirrors often a while ago.
I now go months sometimes without gazing at my reflection.

I do agree that it is scarification, but I do still wonder if it always a mutilation?

Are piercings a vanity?
or
trying to make a statement against this?

All my best,

@dagmaraka,
I also grew out of judging people by their looks,
But did always find an over population of piercings unattractive.

Yes I did used to love hearing peoples war stories about their piercings,
still do if it is a personal life story achievement.

All my best and thank you for your gifts.
