Tagging can also be used to keep tabs on a thread that you are interested in but haven't yet posted in (there is a page where you can see a list of the topics that you've added a tag to).

Each thread can have five active tags at a time, with the tags that have more submissions taking precedence over tags that fewer people have submitted for the thread. These five tags then classify where the thread currently appears on a2k.

This abuse of the tagging feature is detrimental to a2k, but it happens frequently unfortunately.
