Er...that looks like a lump of meat. What makes it a shell steak?

It looks exactly like a shell steak to me. What makes it a shell steak? No idea. It just is. It's also called a strip steak. Does that help?

Re: Rye Bread
Real New Yorkers don't buy bread in plastic bags. You walk into the bakery, stand ON line and when it's your turn (NEXT!), you say "One rye, seedless, slice it please. And three plains and three everythings." (Those are bagels.)

I agree. The ryes in a commercial bag look tasteless to me.
When I buy a rye, or a sourdough (or a sourdough rye) I get it from Central Market or WF.

No preservatives, and nice and crusty.

@chai2,
Yeah, there's no comparison between store bought and bakery bread. My problem, living alone, is that I have to cut the loaf in half, slice and eat one half over three days while the other half is in the freezer.

Hey, margarine -- just asking, I haven't bought any in my entire life-- does anyone call it "oleo" any more?

Here's a question maybe asked already on this thread, but here goes.

In the US, public schools are open to anyone, private schools you must pay to attend. Public schools are paid for with taxes. In particular, property taxes where I live.

I don't understand why in the UK a school you must pay to go to is called public. What are the schools called that have no fee, and are paid for with taxes?

I'm sure it's just a terminology misunderstanding on my part.

I think of pubs, which I believe is short for public houses, and they are open to the public, right? They aren't private clubs, are they?

I'd forgotten about this thread. There was a discussion in one of the MCM groups on FB about the difference between sunsuits, bathing suits and swimsuits earlier this week. Then we got into gym suits vs rompers. You'd have enjoyed parts of the chat.

@ehBeth,
Thank izzy for bumping it.

Made me reread it too.

The part about "chop meat" vs. "chopped meat" made me laugh.

Wally has been on a kick lately with chopped ham sammiches. Except he insists on calling hit "chop ham", just 'cause.

It makes me think about ordering ice tea around here. Of course it's now the millenials world now, but you can always tell someone who's been around for awhile when they refuse to order ice tea without sugar as "unsweetened."

It is Unsweet Tea.

A good waitress, if you just say Ice Tea, will immediate ask "you want sweet or unsweet?"

@glitterbag,
That's what I had for dinner a few hours ago. Just the meat.

Now I'm about to eat my salad. Made it a few minutes ago.
Just waiting for the vegetables to get closer to room temperature.

I don't like eating cold vegetables. That's weird, isn't it?

I don't like food too hot either.

I'm like Goldilocks.
