I was living with my first wife and her kids in Hawaii when we got Sonny from the Humane society. He acted like he was ours right from the start - walked in, slid under the glass coffee table, and made himself at home. He used to like to lick toes a lot - tickled everyone and made it fun to sit at the couch.

He was 8 months old, and I couldn't figure out why anyone would have abandoned such a wonderful, loving, good dog. When my wife and I separated 7 years later while living in Maryland, Sonny went to my mom's house in NC, and my wife and I went into separate situations that wouldn't have been good for Sonny.

He stayed with mom for a few years and became her constant companion and best friend for several years, until she got too frail to care for him as he needed. Then my sister who also lived in NC took him in. Sonny became a treasured part of my sister's family, and was with her for several more years.

Until today. His failing health had made it hard for him to do almost anything but lay down, so my sister and her husband went and sat with him as the vet put him to sleep.

Sonny was a loyal and loving companion to three different households in my family for over 14 years. I will remember him running until his tongue splayed wildly out of his face, and he looked like he was smiling a smile of great joy.

@snood,
For Sonny:

Quote:

NEW FOUND GLORY LYRICS

"Sonny"

I'm sorry
I heard about the bad news today
A crowd of people around you
Telling you it's okay
And everything happens for a reason

When you lose a part of your self
To somebody you know
It takes a lot to let go
Every breath that you remember
Pictures fade away but memory is forever

An empty chair at all the tables
And I'll be seeing you when all my days boil down
But it's better where you're going anyway

I'm sorry
I heard about the bad news today
It's really hard to get through
Tough times and long days
But it really just depends on the season

For now we'll say goodbye
We know it's not the last time
I've lost the best part of my day
But it's better where you're going anyway

This is the last thing
I will remember
It's better where you're going anyway

Many warm hugs for you, Snood and family.

@snood,
Sorry to hear, snood. He sounds like he was a great dog.

Focussing on the memories helps to ease his passing.

My wife and I have to put two of our cats to sleep last year, within a month of each other, due to health problems. It initially crushed us, but we had to remember what great kitties they had been.

(((hugs)))

@snood,
Sonny, yesterday my life was filled with rain
Sonny, you smiled at me and really eased the pain
Now, the dark days are done, and the bright days are here
My Sonny one shines so sincere
Sonny, one so true, I love you

Sonny, thank you for the sunshine bouquet
Sonny, thank you for the love you’ve brought my way
You gave to me your all and all
And now I feel ten feet tall
Sonny, one so true, I love you

Sonny, thank you for the truth you’ve let me see
Sonny, thank you for the facts from A to Z
My life was torn like windblown sand,
Then a rock was formed when we held paws
Sonny, one so true, I love you

@snood,
Snood, I'm sorry you're feeling sad. It's unavoidable when our much loved pets die, isn't it? There's no avoiding the grief. Sonny was a member of your family for 14 years.

I've got to say that your family gave this (then) 18 month old homeless, discarded waif a pretty excellent life! And he gave back in spades! That's about good as it gets between critters & humans. Smile

My sympathies to you, Snood, and your family.

Sonny was loved by more people than most dogs ever get the chance to be. You gave him a great life. Hang onto the memories.

Just wanted to post a couple more pics of him. Here he is chillin' at my mom's house, and in the next two he's playing with, and laying down with our cat at the time in Hawaii, little man.
