This is a ******* lynch mob.

Some people think there is glory in being a martyr.

It's not a lynch mob here. People are going pretty soft, IMO. Having said that, you can't have a glass jaw in debate.

In this thread, sorry to say, we have yet to see a debate, but I'm down with your point about debating in general.

What was set out to be debated? Perhaps why one individual is "scared" of atheists?

@failures art,
What I saw was a person asking an advice type question. People jumping down his throat calling him stupid and various other related insults, that same person tyring to express that it was agenuine question not troll bait. More calling him stupid and defaming the things he believes in. Then the same people having to audacity to wonder why the OP is anxious about the people who answered the thread.

I could care less what the thread is about, it happens all over this board. It has happned in theology posts, political posts, art posts, philosphy posts, relationship posts, it has even happened in should i ask my BF to get circumcized posts. Granted thus is the common ground of general forum culture, I was just hoping that in moving here there would be a congenial and tolerant atmosphere. Debate is debate, slander, anechdotalism, synechdotalism, straw men, ad hominem, hyper generalization, and absurdum do not belong in a debate. Sun could have cared less and I would not be dissapointed in this thread were this actually an attempt to answer a question that sparked genuine debate, but it wasn't.

Once again, what was there to debate?

"Why are Atheists so Scary" is the quixotically spelled titular question. To which i respond--they're not.

So what was there to debate?

@GoshisDead,
You'll note, that I did not jump down sun's throat. I addressed it directly and politely.

There is a bit of us-versus-you mentality here since the merger. I can understand that. From the A2K side, I think some of the Phils have been a bit authoritative. It seems that if I'm to believe what I hear, the Phils are here to educate me on how to debate. The two groups have different methods, I think people should be tempered not to claim that they have a leg up on the other on how *this* is done.

Perhaps since the merger, the Phils have felt like visitors? Like they don't have equal claim to the site? I believe this kind of thing softens over time and at some point after we've interacted enough, some sort of decorum composite will establish itself naturally. We need not be claiming that people are doing things wrong.

There's no real right way to do this.

We would have reacted the same way to anybody else that started such a thread. There is a bit of that merger nervousness still in the air, but I assure you that has little to nothing to do with our responses here.

The thread originator made it personal in the way his/her aims were stated. That was the wrong beginning for anybody, regardless of where they came from.

@edgarblythe,
I completely understand that anybody posting such a thread would be treated this way here. That was the point of the diatribe.

That's quite true. And yet you conspicuously aren't directing this criticism to the person who started the thread by asserting that atheists are scary---which is a slanderous, anecdotal, straw-man, ad-hominem, hyper-generalizing absurdum. Most of the others just called sometime sun's foul, quite correctly in my opinion. That's not intolerance, just karma.

@failures art,
The conversation seems to be going something like this:

SS: Why have you got those big scary gloves on your hands?
a2k: <thump>
SS: <falls over>
a2k: Huh! Can't take a punch? Got a glass jaw? Not so big now, are you?
PF: I really don't think you should have hit him.
a2k: Who do you think you are, trying to tell us how to behave?

I hadn't been feeling any culture shock to speak of, since the move. But I'm feeling it now, all right.

It is you setting up this us against them scenario. Nobody else here seems to really want it.

Quote:
Why are Atheists so scary?

They scare me.

I have rationalised this into at least two positions. (more to come when I think on)

One; I am terrified of their truth taking away mine Truth.

Two; They always seem so angry and anger terrifies me as well.

There is a difference between hypergeneralizing and saying "They Scare Me", "I am terrified of their truth taking away mine Truth". this is a personal observation and an introspection. It implies that he is unsure of himself. Unsure of his relationship with his own truth and that of an atheist. "They always seem so angry and anger terrifies me as well" the SEEM angry", not a hypergeneralization, it is further exposition of his unsurity and anxiety.

So no it was not an assertion, it was not an aspersion. I can see someone being suspicious of it being a troll post. It seems it wasn't a troll post, but troll bait. If it was designed to be troll bait, we all took it and shame on us, but it was not a post condemning or judging atheists, if it was judging anyone it was a post judging the author.
