Should The Colors of this Site be Changed?

Reply Sun 13 Jun, 2010 02:37 pm
A number of new (granted beamed down against their will) members of this site have mentioned it's very bright with too much white. I agree and would prefer it to be less like my gynecologist's office and more like my local coffee house. Anyone else have any opinions on this? Please suggest colors. I like earth tones myself, much more warm and cozy for chatting.

Well, other boards will give you a preference of several skins (color choices)
and one can individually choose what suits one best. I would like to have that
if possible.
I like the white background as I have difficulties seeing with a darker skin.

@Green Witch,
I suggested in one of the last rounds of site suggestion threads that one should be able to customize the aesthetics of the site.

I'm not to fond of the shades of blue, let alone the vast snow blindness that is the majority of the site's aesthetics.

@Green Witch,
After the initial shock coming here from Abuzz, I've adjusted to the colours, but there is still an awful lot of white here. Clean, but decidedly downmarket/NoFrills. At least it's not bright yellow.

Everything else works so well, I had stopped even considering the colors. I'm happy.

I'd like the colours based around this:

@G-Thomson,
I like color - I'm a painter, after all, and I have used color in my homes rather adventurously or subtlely, depending on the year and my tastes at the time. On the other hand, I have very screwed up eyes, including night blindness, and I actually like the white for that reason.

On reading all the recent complaints about the white, I can sympathize with that at the same time I have my own needs, and went to look at the youtube example, and was very surprised that it just seemed a lot of variations of grey or grey brown with a bit of blue (perhaps I didn't look closely enough) - I had been expecting some, um, more playful sets of colors.

Back when I had my last art gallery, we played with wall color, as many museums do (not all art is set on white walls, thank goodness). I also looked at hundreds of custom art websites, and tended to like ones with a certain depth of color background, say for example, a light caramel color.
I suppose there have been studies about what works best for color on forums.

Anyway, I'd probably enjoy a change of colors, might even love it, but I'd like to have a light version as an option, if that is possible.

@G-Thomson,
You're also probably just a little homesick. Nothing wrong with that. Personally, I'm not a fan of brown with blue, but the green and blue are okay.

Yes, but you don't even have to turn the light on. I like the white but, I agree with ebeth, maybe we should be able to choose our own color.

@Green Witch,
IF it were to ever change, I would prefer a colour that was subtle, and not distracting.

And, certainly not (ever!) a black background with white lettering, which I absolutely, positively detest! Mad

I'll amend my post - it is not so much that for my eyes the main color has to be white, as that I prefer that part of the screen to have some expanse of lightness.

I went looking for my then favorite art website that showed a particular artist's work, some sort of New York Library site, looking for that light caramel color, and couldn't find it. Then I found his work, now shown against a white background - but in the work are a lot of colors I like as a group, whatever the lack of saturation within an individual painting.. any given color could be lighter or darker.

James B. Moore at DFN Gallery

disclosure - we had him scheduled for a show at our gallery but he went with the university gallery instead, which I understand, so I do know him - this not meant as promotional.

@chai2,
Interesting - in a lot of ways, your Unicorn and Moore's colors have aspects in common.
