is there gonna be anything at stake in this tourney (besides pride in helping your country win)?

seems like a good way to get injured right before the season starts...

I agree Region, but I guess this is going to happen, regardless.

Right now, the big issue seems to be Cuban participation. I have no idea what the fuss is about, beyond the usual pandering to Castro-hating Cubans in Florida...

The US Treasure department does not let the Cuban team play, because there's money at stake, and it would be against the embargo.

Cuba has declared that it will give out any proceedings to the victims of Katrina.

MLB is lobbying for the US government to let the World and Olympic champions play.

Bronson Arroyo took a discounted contract because he wants to stay with the Sox. Don't see that happen much in baseball.

Muchas gracias for the explanation, fbaezer. I think the whole boycott panders to Castro-hating Cubans in Florida (I doubt Fidel is doing without) but I don't want to turn this thread into a political fight!

An agreement was reached today. Cuba will play the WBC. That's good news for baseball.

I do hope the WBC makes the US fans a little less parrochial about the best sport in the world.

If the Cubans win, will Pres. Bush welcome the team to the White House?

That would be amazing if it happens, Region. Given NYY's thinness on the mound, I'm a bit surprised that they haven't shown an interest, too...

One of these years Clemens' arm is gonna fall off, and some team will have spent a lot of $$ in vain. I just hope it's NYY...

<< strikes match, lights stove >>

it is being reported that the sawx have landed the rights to sign japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka.

it is only costing them upwards of $40-45 million.

according to phillies manager Charlie Manuel, "with his stuff, Matsuzaka could win 25 games in our league."

how about this for a starting rotation?
Schilling, Beckett, Papelbon, and Matsuzaka.
that should keep us bahstinians warm this winter...
