They're shaping up as the team to beat in the NL East next season. Though, if memory serves, they were the team to beat last winter, too...

The only news I've seen from the Bronx is the interview that Torre gave where he said that Jeter could play center field. Then Cashman denied Torre ever said this. Weird.

If history tells us anything, Steinbrenner won't sit still and let the Mets grab all the headlines...

Nine trades, 11 free-agent signings on busy day

Roger Clemens won't be pitching for Houston on Opening Day, but Trevor Hoffman will be back in the San Diego Padres' bullpen.

On one of the busiest days at the winter meetings in several years, the NL champion Astros refused to offer salary arbitration to Clemens on Wednesday, which means they can't re-sign the seven-time Cy Young Award winner until May 1. The 43-year-old right-hander hasn't decided whether he will retire or pitch next season, and the decision by his hometown team could lead to other clubs trying to sign him.

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, two of his former clubs, might be interested in signing Clemens, who made $18 million last season. The Rocket was 13-8 and led the major leagues with a 1.87 ERA.

"I'm sure there's a lot of teams the would like to have Roger pitching for them next year," Boston special assistant Craig Shipley said.

Said Clemens' agent, Randy Hendricks: "If anybody calls, we'll listen."

There were nine trades on the third day of the winter meetings, with the Texas Rangers reaching a tentative deal to send All-Star second baseman Alfonso Soriano to the Washington Nationals for outfielders Brad Wilkerson and Terrmel Sledge plus minor league pitcher Armando Galarraga. The deal is subject to the players passing physicals.

Bernie Williams was among 26 players offered arbitration, giving the Yankees until Jan. 8 to re-sign their longtime outfielder, who is wanted back in a reserve role.

"We're going to try to exhaust the situation with the Yankees before we move forward," agent Scott Boras said.

Boras also represents Johnny Damon, who was offered arbitration by Boston. The Red Sox would like their center fielder back, but Boras is seeking a seven-year contract in the neighborhood of $84 million. Boras said Damon was in Dallas earlier this week to meet with teams, but would not specify which clubs.

"I'll have to say it's very much in the air where Johnny Damon's going to be next year," Boras said.

The Chicago White Sox refused to offer arbitration to two-time AL MVP Frank Thomas, who was injured much of the last two seasons. The World Series champions re-signed Paul Konerko last week and acquired Jim Thome to be their designated hitter, leaving no room for the Big Hurt.

San Diego said catcher Ramon Hernandez was headed to the Baltimore Orioles. Hernandez needs to pass a physical before his four-year contract can be finalized.

On the trade front, the payroll-paring Marlins made Juan Pierre the latest player to join the migration from Florida, sending the center fielder to the Chicago Cubs for right-hander Sergio Mitre and two minor league pitchers.

Pierre followed Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell, Guillermo Mota, Carlos Delgado, Luis Castillo and Paul Lo Duca out of Florida, which has cut about $45 million of payroll since the end of the season.

"You see them getting picked off one by one and you know that you're going to be one of them," Pierre said. "It's just a matter of when and where."

Atlanta sent failed closer Dan Kolb back from whence he came. The Braves, who acquired him from Milwaukee during last year's winter meetings, dealt him to the Brewers for pitcher Wes Obermueller. In another deal, Braves catcher Johnny Estrada went to Arizona for pitchers Lance Cormier and Oscar Villarreal.

San Diego dealt third baseman Sean Burroughs to Tampa Bay for pitcher Dewon Brazelton, and second baseman Mark Loretta to Boston for catcher Doug Mirabelli.

Milwaukee sent first baseman Lyle Overbay to Toronto for right-hander Dave Bush, outfield prospect Gabe Gross and a player to be named, a move that opens the first-base job for Prince Fielder. Left-hander Ray King was traded from St. Louis to Colorado for outfielder Larry Bigbie and infielder Aaron Miles.

Pittsburgh traded its second left-handed starting pitcher in two days, sending Mark Redman to Kansas City for pitcher Jonah Bayliss and a player to be named. The Pirates wanted to trim some payroll after picking up first baseman Sean Casey and his $8.5 million salary from the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday for lefty Dave Williams, a deal that still isn't finalized.

It was unclear how much progress was being made in a proposed three-way trade that would send shortstop Edgar Renteria from Boston to Atlanta, shortstop Julio Lugo from Tampa Bay to Boston and third base prospect Andy Marte to Tampa Bay.

There were 11 signings among free agents, with shortstop Rafael Furcal and the Los Angeles Dodgers finalizing their $39 million, three-year contract, and outfielder John Mabry agreeing to a one-year deal with the Cubs worth $1,075,000.

so who's gonna catch for atlanta?
and will bobby cox have as much success without mazzone?

i like the renteria-lugo-marte swap.
edgar had an atrocious year in the field, and you could see him pressing at the plate because of it...

can't see clemens pitching anywhere else -- he had it too good in houston... but it'd be awesome if he came back heeyuh to settle some unfinished business...

the loretta-mirabelli trade looks like a steal for us.
we get a quality starting 2B for a backup catcher? sweet...

are any teams foolish enough to give damon a 7 year deal?
he's 32, and showed signs of wear & tear this year...

The Braves brought up a catcher last season when Estrada was injured, and he did so well that E became expendable.

It'll take me some time to digest all the info, Region! Given the timing necessary for Clemens to return to Houston, I can't imagine him pitching for them next season. I see him back in pinstripes. Houston is handling Clemens the way the Braves dealt with Maddux, leading to him signing with the Cubs...

This just handed to me: The Renteria-Marte trade is a done deal. (Marte, for those who don't follow the Braves, was one of their top infield prospects. Played briefly last season when Chipper Jones was hurt.)

How old is Renteria?

Renteria is 30 years old and me being a Braves fan, I think he's a better overall player than Furcal even with his 30 errors last year. The Braves did just sign a veteran 38 year old catcher to back up McCann. He was signed to a one year deal.

Even though I am a Braves fan, I think the Mets will be the team to beat. The only question marks is their starting pitching with 3 pitchers in their mid to late 30's.

The Braves are still looking for a more experienced left fielder and a closer and maybe even a guy to platoon with Adam Laroche.

I do want to say that John Shourholz goes to my aunts church in Georgia and he went to speak at a church dinner and people asked all kinds of questions about their team.

My question is if Eddie Perez excepts arbitration, Will they carry 3 catchers? Todd Pratt can also play 1B.

I suspect Eddie will be offered a job with the Braves organization (i.e., his playing days are over). I hope you're right about Renteria, j.aumen, and welcome to A2K. It's great to see a fellow Braves fan on board!

Thank you D'artagnan. I'm glad to be here. I think this will be Renteria's year defensively and offensively. Especially being back in the NL after a years absence. I think you're right about Perez. His playing days are over and in a year, maybe two I think he will get some job in the Braves organization. It's nice to know that someone from Seattle (west coast) is a Braves fan.

Rumor has it, even though it's just a rumor, the Braves are interested in Craig Monroe to play left field instead of Ryan Langerhans. Take over the everyday job. They're also interested in Octavio Dotel to be their closer. I think they will make at least one more significant move before spring training whether by trade or free agent. Of course, they were also interested in Nomar before trading to get Edgar. So those are just rumors. It would be, in my opinion, a really great outfield if they can get Craig Monroe. He has more experience. He has more power, has the potential to hit for average, and is better defensively ever though Langerhans made a few great plays last year. He is definitely a threat with the Joneses and Francouer if the Braves can get him.

Can you believe the Mets? They signed Julio Franco to a two-year deal which at the end of his contract, he will be 49. Now that's more senior presence than veteran presence. He fell apart offensively and defensively for the Braves at the end of the 2005 year.

I didn't hear that news about Franco. Amazing. I really liked him as a Brave. Re Langerhans: I think he deserves another year to prove himself...

That's not going to happen. They're not going to take on Manny's contract, and the Sox aren't going to trade Manny AND cash.

I liked Langerhans in left field. Maybe he should get another chance to prove himself. Right now, the Braves main priority should be looking for a closer, though.

I don't think, by the way, that Clemens is coming back. I think in the long run he will decide to stay with his family and help his son in the Houston organization and with his shoulder hurting him at the end of last year, I don't think he is coming back. Sure, he had the best year of his career but with his shoulder bothering and his family, honestly I don't see him coming back.
