Looks the NL East will be highly competitive next season. Will it be the year the Braves are finally dethroned? Stay tuned...

Yeah, but not by the Washington Nationals. LOL.

Washington, though, is bound to be Mexico's favorite team, with Vinicio Vinny Castilla, Luis Ayala, Antonio Cañón Osuna and the struggling, but liked, Esteban Loaiza. It's been over a decade when a MLB team had 4 of our Nationals in it's roster.

I propose they be immediately re-named the Nacionales.

Sammy Sosa is going to do whatever slamming he has left in Baltimore, it appears.

Cubs, Orioles close on Sosa deal

I did not know he had fallen so far out of favor:

Quote:
The Cubs have been looking for a taker for Sosa since the end of the season, when he skipped out on the finale at Wrigley Field. Sosa initially claimed he didn't leave until the seventh inning, but the Cubs produced videotapes showing him leaving shortly after the game began and fined him $87,500 -- one day's salary.

So they lose their two biggest bats (counting Alou), same as my 'Stros (Kent with Beltran).

I hope one of us can keep up with the Cardinals.

I've heard two different versions of how slugger-friendly Camden Yards is. I gather Javie Lopez griped about it, but some commentators say otherwise. Can any AL fans weigh in on this?

A baseball stats fan weighing in:

Camden Yards is a better hitter park than Wrigley Field. Actually, it ranks 5th on runs scored and 6th on batting average on MLB, while Wrigley Field is 16th and 21st, respectively.
BUT, Wrigley Field is a better slugger park than Camden Yards. It ranks 2nd in home-runs, and 1st in right-handed home-runs, while Camden Yards is only slightly better than average (11th in home-runs, 8th in right-handed home-runs).

Thanks, fbaezer. We'll see how Sosa (and Javier Lopez) do in '05.

Saw yesterday on TV my first baseball game of '05.

Mexico-Venezuela at the start of the Caribbean Series (the tournament between the champions of the winter leagues of Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela).
It was a great game, Francisco Campos ("Pancho Ponches"), the winner of the pitching triple crown in the Mexican summer league, received only three Venezuelan singles in 8 innings, with 11 strikeouts and only one base on balls, and had a flawless relief by Luis Ayala. Mexico won 4-0 (two runs batted in by Vinny Castilla, another by Erubiel Durazo). The Venezuelan press is angry at Bobby Abreu, who had a clause, on his winter contract, that he would not play the Caribbean Series, and rest a little more before spring training.

RP, I don't know if you were being sarcastic or not. I don't read old-timer in a 31 year all ball player (a swimmer; a tennis player, but not a beisbolista).

Castilla is 37 or 38.
He and Durazo had their winter contract the other way around. They reached the team a week before the regular season ended and went through the play-offs all the way to the big series.
In fact, Durazo batted .158 during the regular season. No homers, no RBIs. LOL.

good point re: castilla.
i was being somewhat sarcastic...

some players are aging better than others these days.
case in point -- roger clemens, randy johnson... and especially julio franco, who seems to've found that elusive fountain.
says he wants to play until he's 50!

I hope he does. He plays for my Braves, and he's not likely to demand a king's ransom to stay signed. Plus, Julio comes across as a likable guy!

Not to be too obvious. Pitchers tend to age better as they only work 6.5 innings every 4 or 5 days. And in the AL they don't even bat.

Catchers and SS's play a grueling schedule.
