the cardinals made they're move yesterday, getting larry walker.
they already had quite a murderer's row with pujols, rolen & edmonds...
Two weeks ago I wrote:Yankees, A's, White Sox and Red Sox as wild card;

Yankees and Cardinals in the Fall Classic.
I think I am going to be wrong about the White Sox, since they have lost the Big Hurt and MaggliO.
So change that to Twins and I'll keep going.
How about three cheers for Greg Maddux, who won his 300th game over the weekend. And with none of the self-indulgent BS that surrounded Roger Clemens last summer as he did the same...
i heard someone on tv say that after maddux, glavine will be the last 300 game winner...
Glavine may have a hard time reaching 300, especially pitching for the Mets, who give him no run support and play lousy defense.
But you're right, Region, about Glavine probably being the last guy to have a shot at 300. The game has changed...
bobby cox should open a manager's school when he retires.
seems it almost doesn't matter who's on the roster; he magically turns average players into good ones year after year.
i might have to jump on that bandwagon...
I'd jump on it too...except
nobody has taken so many good players on such a short trip. Torre outshines him IMO
Panzade, I respect Torre, but let's not forget the payroll he gets to play with. NYY now has a payroll about double the next closest team. It's not a level playing field!
True, but bucks don't translate into wins necessarily. The Braves roster has been just as good or better in the last 10 years and have less to show for it. Mind you, I'm not a Yankees fan...anymore. I think McKeon managed one of the best seasons in my memory last year.
I agree that winning the World Series is the yardstick generally used to assess excellence, but I tend to give Bobby Cox, who's won a dozen division championships in a row, the benefit of the doubt. "The playoffs are a crap shoot," he has said.
OK, I'm a Braves fan; I admit it...
LOL, Ok you are. The general manager and pitching coach are another reason Bobby's done so well.
True. I love to watch Bobby Cox and Leo Mazzone, a couple of middle-aged guys, suffering (or celebrating) in unison as they sit side-by-side in the dugout.
Their relationship is touching and they garner a lot of respect from other teams.
edgar martinez'll call it quits...
18 years with the same team is impressive and nearly unheard of.
does this DH have the stats to make it to the HOF
Excellent question, Region. A colleague here is in mourning over his retirement, but she knows it was inevitable.
But will he be voted into the Hall? Seems to me that being a DH shouldn't be held against him. Baseball created the DH (much to my distaste) so a DH should certainly be eligible...
For some reason, this painting by Rockwell, which I always liked, kind of reminds me of Leo and Bobby:
altho neither one of them ever seem to be asleep at the wheel;
cox is constantly yapping at the umpire
and mazzone is getting in his low-impact workout on the bench
Cox is also a real rah-rah guy when the Braves are at the bat. They seem to pick up his voice on TBS a lot of the time...
