How about Pete Rose Rolling Eyes - I have always thought the world of Torre, I agree with your assessment Region, accept; I would always question a Yankee when dealing in Yankee matters. They always believe the only "right" decision is a decision that benefits the Yankees, only. For everthing else, Torre would be great....

I'd like to see a commissioner like the ones in the NFL and NBA. Guys with some sort of vision that encompasses the owners, players and fans.

I fail to see Selig ever looking beyond the immediate issues, and he doesn't even solve those. And as an owner (one with zero credibility in his own town right now), he can hardly be representing all the relevant constituencies!

agreed.
it would have to be an outsider, with no conflicts of interest.
guess what i meant was someone like torre... altho, he did play for, and manage, a few other teams, before he got yank-erized.

Not that he meets anyone's qualifications who have posted so far, but I suggest the perfect candidate would be...

Geore W. Bush.

He's going to need a job in nine months... Cool

Besides, it would probably mean Rove or Cheney would be calling the shots. Scary thought! It's bad enough these guys run the country--we're talking about major league baseball here!

I'd love to see Mario Cuomo take the job, though he might be getting too old. He played baseball at St. John's University. Tried to have a career in the game, but he couldn't hit the curve...

Actually, a person I believe for his fairness and diplomacy who is available is Bill Clinton. I don't know however how he feels about tradition, which even if an outsider they must know and feel The Tradition.......

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Cubs and Greg Maddux are set to finalize a contract on Wednesday.

$14 or 15 million a year, including all incentives, for two years.

Sheesh.

At least the Cardinals won't be in contention...

Actually, I think it's three years for a total of $24 million. Still a lot for an aging pitcher, but I'm just grateful that NYY didn't sign him. Steinbrenner, of course, has been known to swoop in at the last minute to outbid another team, but it's not looking like that will happen...

You are coe-rect, Musketeer. Maddux signed for somewhat less than the Atlanta paper suggested.

The Yankees payroll is going to be four times that of a number of other teams.

Three times that of my Astros.

Think of the amount of luxury tax the Boss is going to have to pay.

And the poor blood vessels that will burst in his head if they don't win the Series.

Well, I'll asleep better once I know for sure that Maddux is going to Chicago.

Now that A-Rod is a Yankee, won't it be fun rooting against them this season? Will it be sweet, or what, if they fail to win the World Series? You bet it will!

Actually, I stretched to get to 50. My dislike started in about '58/'60. In 1955-56 I started listening to good olde Dizzy Dean. Had no prejudices in those days, Mickey Mantle, Wally Moon, Ted Kluzuski, Nelly Fox. Those were the days.

Those were the days, indeed! May I add to that list: Henry Aaron, Willy Mays, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, and many more.

My official date of rooting fervently against NYY was the World Series of 1957 when the Milwaukee Braves beat 'em. I was about to turn eight, and I was thrilled. All the games were day games, believe it or not. I still remember the black and white console TV I watched it on!

Same here, when I took a trip back to Memphis on business I drove straight to that old address on Fairfield Street. Yes, I will always remember my first baseball - and yes, they were all day games - if I am correct they were the Game of the Week.

The big apologies back then were not about nipples or drugs but Dizzy apologies for the coloquialism he was fond of using. I remember they said that he would be the ruin of all the kids, I guess that's my problem Laughing yeah, that's the ticket Rolling Eyes

PeeWee Reese, Warren Spahn, Whitey Ford, and a young Sandy Koufax - oh, can't forget Yogi Berra - Yes, I was a Brave and Cardinal fan......
