@dlowan,
Just checked in for tomorrow's airline...or tried to...the USA has to see your ongoing out of the US travel ticket before confirming. What a waste of time!!

Off to the Victoria and Albert and wherever else I have time to go before meeting Peter and Paula for dinner for last time....likely for a year.

Peter has, of course, got a job just as we are leaving...as Murphy's Law decrees. You may recall we had intended to spend at least half our English time staying with them where P was working to save money and to make them happy.

At least the second part of the plan succeeded, as they were quite lonely and worried when we came (no job and going nuts staying in very kind cousin's tiny flat...kind cousin highly Tory and full of regrets for British Empire and all) and we all had a great time in England and Germany.

Had resisted Victoria and Albert but dropped in yesterday and fell in love with European Renaissance sculpture....off to Mediaeval era today...one of my favourite periods for art.

Lovely sunny day.

See some of you in New York Saturday I hope!!!!!

I have a feeling I won't be seeing you on Saturday. Too sick, too soon. But another day for sure.

Da Bunny has landed.

Got in at rush hour so it has taken me four hours to get from touchdown to bedroom.

Boida...let me know when you feel able to have a much quieter visit...I could maybe drop round with some food and have a little picnic or something at your place?

Not before you feel ready of course. But if you feel up to it we don't have to wait for a big get together.

Who wants to play?

@msolga,
Just heard that helen's mum didn't manage to keep going long enough for Helen to get home

She died while Helen was still in Singapore but her phone for some reason didn't pick up the messages

Probably best that Helen didn't know until she got home and had friends around her

Probably best for her mum not to have suffered any longer...but still very sad

@dlowan,
I do hope I have some playmates soon!

Although it was a long trip In from Newark, I have to say that the views of manhattan coming in were fabulous

This neighborhood spooks me a bit being on my own and it being dark when I got in

I'll suss it out tomorrow morning and hopefully feel better. It's lower Harlem and could be a buzz

The room is fine and the apartment is ok...my hostesses room mate was very kind . He's gone out now and I haven't met my hostess or Susan the other room mate

There's NOISES now...I assume from other apartments

I do hope I have playmates soon!!!
I think julie sleeps elsewhere when she has a tenant

@dlowan,
You picked quite a day. The news this morning was about flooded streets and subways in NY and travel delays.

Glad you are in place.

Surprised not.

Our trip has been peppered with popes and terror threats in Paris and Berlin and strikes in france that would have stuffed our plans if we had left a day later

What's a few floods?

I might mention the Ryan air landing in London from Berlin that was so hard I expected our bums to scrape along the runway!!!

Not to mention The Fall and my blister which is try g for some sort of record about how many layers of skin can blister before reaching bone!!!

And now a death

I met a charming Vancouverian couple (formerly from Paris) on the bus on the way in who are here for a very special art tour. They made me think of wee Bethie and how much I hope she can make it

@dlowan,
Oh, man, what a situation for Helen. Sympathy from here to her. This may be something for her to deal with.

(My father was moving from ICU in the morning, so I went out for drinkies to the Red Log, three blocks from my apartment, on a Friday with work friends. My mother and I went in the morning to his bedside and it was empty. We asked where he had been transferred to. Oh, he died. The Veteran's Administration lives.)

Excruciating for Helen.

I don't know how to word this - but may your own trip progress.

@dlowan,
Reverberations from me.

Last time in italy was when there was much protest there re u.s., luckily I forget just why, and why I agreed with them, not that they could tell.

I had major blisters on that trip, and I'm not the blister type. I wore my trusty Danskos (only person in all of italy). The trouble, that I figured out much later, was that I had added a foam pad, thus tightening my foot to the interior of the shoe. I mailed the shoes home and bought some gawdawful sneakers in Florence that cured the problem. I don't post that picture. Woman in black suit with white sneakers. At the least a target for scorn.

Further, a lover and I (memory swoon) met a couple from Vancouver when we were in Puerto Vallarta. Lots of sharp conversation. She was a burn ward nurse. We exchanged letters for quite a while.

I hope Bethie can make it.

@ossobuco,
Oh, at ninety six, with dementia, chronic heart failure, a couple of strokes and bad lungs Helen and I knew going in that there was a good chance of something major happening while she was away

She's sad but very philosophical

Losing a mum is bloody big though no matter how old they are

So.... I didn't follow the whole thread. I am planning on trying to make it to NY next weekend. What's going on that Saturday - can someone tell me what page the final plans were made at?

I'll likely be coming down just for the day unless I can find cheap housing which seems unlikely.
