A Brooklyn-based poet has won a prize named for one of the New York City borough's most famous former residents, Walt Whitman.

The Academy of American Poets announced Wednesday that Chris Hosea (hoh-ZAY'-uh) has won the Walt Whitman Award for a debut collection. Hosea will receive $5,000 and his book, "Put Your Hands In," will be published by Louisiana State University Press.

The winner was chosen by one of the greatest contemporary poets, John Ashbery. The Whitman award was established in 1975.

Giant snails are invading south Florida, leaving a sticky mess behind. The growing infestation of giant African land snails is worrying, because the mollusks can gnaw through stucco and plaster.

More than 1,000 giant snails are being captured each week in Miami-Dade County. In total, 117,000 have been captured since the first snail was spotted by a homeowner in September 2011.

They should have poured salt on them.

I had been told that snails with shells were from France. Never heard of African ones before that story appeared.

Yum....pass the garlic sauce and escargot forks.
