on the contrary, it presumes a society where people respect the rights of others and live in peace--that's a civilized society. clearly you conservatives don't believe in that, David. Which basically means it is YOU who is not in step with the founding fathers, not us.

That 's an imaginary society.
People don 't respect one another 's rights, not even within the same family.
People don 't even agree on what those rights are.
People continually violate other people 's rights, in all societies.
'Twas ever thus.

People need to defend their rights.

What u say is a contradiction in terms. It is by adhering to the beliefs of the Founders,
who were Individualists, that one is a conservative.
Any man who deviates therefrom, definitionally, is not a conservative.

The bush administration was dangerous. Anyone with sense would have been fearful then.

@maporsche,
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!

Afraid to go into stores!!!!

I worked retail for years, even in a horrid mall. Now, I hate malls because they are centers of conformity and demonstrate how capitalism has run amok and become a harmful force in society. But you are afraid to go in without a gun.

I told David he was paranoid and he said he had no enemies. Gosh! like poor David, you have no idea how deeply paranoid you are!

You know, there used to be a man in Chelmsford, MA who ate at a certain restaurant every day and talked to himself while he waited for his meal to be served. When the waitress brought him his lunch, he said good-bye to himself. If I didn't know that he had died, I would assume that you were that fellow.

David wrote: Yes, but the felons shoud be ISOLATED and prevented from having contact with the decent people.

To which I answer: Most people think gun toters are felons.

Are you just now discovering this fact, pom?
There are times I actually feel sympathy for David's mental illness.

@OmSigDAVID,
Let's see, liberalism gave American female suffrage and abolished slavery. Liberalism also ended the unjust war in Vietnam.

If we ever had a liberal president, someone who truly governed from the left, we may end the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

David Brenner pointed out that Obama is what was called a moderate Republican and I, along with many real liberals, agree.

And, yes, I know David thinks Obama is a socialist.

@OmSigDAVID,
You are a left over from the 19th C . . . a Know Nothing. You have no idea what you are talking about. You would make an excellent Monte Python skit character. Honestly, I suspect you are some half paralyzed, 75 year old man in a nursing home, suffering from acute loneliness and paranoia. Do you have the nurse check under your bed at night?

Plain, when I see this worthless material that u hurl at Maporsche,
personally attacking him as u do,
it shows me that your mind is deeply troubled,
and disorganized, to the point that u are mentally disabled.

I wonder that Maporsche woud have anything to discuss with such a mental case;
like a nasty Gracie Allen.
U are not able to discuss the relative value of ideas.
U are limited to hurling off-topic personal insults at Maporsche; that 's no fun, waste of time.

I see no value to conversing with a nut like u.
I am putting u on Ignore. Good bye!

@Merry Andrew,
Andrew, Actually, I knew he was a completely rude lunatic but I hadn't been on a2k for almost three years. It is amazing how little it changed. David really is off the deep end, but I do not feel sorry for him. However, I notice that you feel sorry for his mental illness. Would his illness be happier if it belonged to someone else?

Wondering whether it takes one to know one or good riddance is a better response.

Poor little David actually misquoted me then called me nuts! So cute!

@plainoldme,
I agree. That's when I bought my first gun. What Bush was doing to our rights made me want to protect myself in case it got any worse.

Why didn't you feel that way?

@plainoldme,
Either response wouldn't surprise me plainoldme. I thought I was having a conversation with an adult.

I don't appreciate the insults. The choices you make will have an impact on the quality of conversation you have at this board. I would keep that in mind.

You seem to have missed my point entirely. Your rude and childish behavior will keep me from explaining it to you and, without an apology, I will not be responding to your posts.

I hope you have fun taking with MA.

@OmSigDAVID,
It is not an imaginary society. People stop at stop signs and slow down at unmarked intersections and drive at a slow pace through residential neighborhoods our of respect for others.

Now, if you feel, as you wrote, that people ALWAYS fail to respect the rights of others, even in the same family, why would you put yourself at risk by carrying a gun and promoting the carrying of a gun.

You also wrote that people continually violate other people's rights. For years, I have written on these boards that when two rights are in conflict, one is not a right.

That's a basic Post-Enlightenment principle, a defining tenet of Western democracy.

Now, if everyone started carrying guns, we would turn into Iraq, a situation we created and haven't the wits or the ethics or the know how to fix. It was like the opening the lid of Pandora's Box.

Neither you nor maporsche can understand why I don't want to carry a gun. I am not threatened by forces that can be shot at!

I am threatened by people who fail to care for the environment. I am threatened by the corrupt commercial and financial system of this country that was once capitalism but is now a monster. But, owning a gun would do nothing against these forces.

Gun ownership creates problems but does not solve them.
