@Olivier5,
I believe what is believable given the sources available.

Jesus existence has only dubious sources contrary to your assertions.

Thus it's probably false and that's what I've been telling you for a while..

@cicerone imposter,
There was a Canaanite culture at the root of the Hebrew culture, with very similar gods. And yes, some myths from the Bible may have been told in a Canaanite setting in some earlier form but they were written down in the Torah at a later stage.

@timur,
You're entitled to your opinion. This is not the thread to discuss this issue anyway.

@Olivier5,
For you, hypocrisy is a kind of achievement.

You have been spewing a whole bunch of off topic utterances and now you are telling me this is off topic?

@Olivier5,
You proved my point; that the writing of the Torah was much later than the verbal communication of their mythical god.

How can you rely on verbal communication that's translated into writing some centuries later?

Is that a difficult concept for you?

Maybe that's why this thread is dead.

@edgarblythe,
"How am I here right now its a miracle"

Non-belief is the lack of belief. Belief that something isn't is also the lack of faith. How could either be proven or held in reality. Non belief is like death it only exist as the lack of. With omniscience it would all be alright all the non believers would be doer thinkers and the believers imaginary creatures.

This study could say anything that inhibits nirvana is non existent.

@Olivier5,
It dies a natural death a while after trolls take over. All it takes to revive it after that is for one atheist to post. Then the trolls rise up like the living dead, to romp until they run out of momentum again.

@edgarblythe,
The trolls are not a problem in themselves. Put them on ignore and they disappear. They are only a problem when they are the only people to talk to, i.e. when other posters opt to shut up.

This thread was decently active at some point, e.g. about whether there is or should be an atheist movement, but as usual it died off because of too much intolerance for dissenting views.

Aren't those the ones that are contrary to yours, to which you are intolerant?

@Olivier5,
When the trolls flood a thread I don't take it as dissenting views, but an attempt to bury any attempt atheists make to use this thread as K intended when she started it.

@edgarblythe,
By 'troll' you mean someone whom you disagree with. I mean a poster getting a kick out of disrupting a discussion by way of provocation and insults.

When we atheists tried to use this thread to discuss how to 'live' our atheism, we were told to shut up because, they said, there was no such thing as 'atheism' as a positive philosophy, atheism was just a 'lack of belief', and therefore there wasn't enough common ground to warrant a discussion..

Sad but true: this thread was killed by atheists afraid of standing up as atheists, and afraid of debating with other atheists.

@Olivier5,
None of us long time posters on this thread are afraid of debating dissenters from atheism. Most of us are simply not interested. We have been interested, instead, in talking among ourselves, which is why littleK started the thread and we have tried to keep it going. There are one hundred thirty six other atheism threads for believers in religions to discuss their views at. This one was designed for us to talk.

You may be interested in debating the religious about atheism, in which case, start another thread.

"When we atheists tried to use this thread to discuss how to 'live' our atheism, we were told to shut up because, they said, there was no such thing as 'atheism' as a positive philosophy, atheism was just a 'lack of belief', and therefore there wasn't enough common ground to warrant a discussion.. "

Huh? Actually, discussing atheism as a positive philosophy or simple but clear lack of belief would be fine with most of us atheists of whatever sort on this thread; we've done that at some point. If you want to talk about the positives and what we could be doing now, you may find some tilting your way. I remember that Thomas was interested. I don't remember any of us telling you to shut up. I do remember saying what I thought re myself.

edit to add -
I was recruited to be a postulant in a missionary order of catholic nuns. Never did buy the shoes, but that was by the skin of my teeth as I'd signed the papers. In my later life I tend to avoid convincing others about beliefs of many sorts, and this probably affects my views on atheism as an ism to organize around.

Edits again - it's probably why I didn't go into advertising as a potential career.
