@Olivier5,
Has another one gone to have a boo-hoo in Mom's apron because some nasty yobs wouldn't let him have all his own way?

They just might resign, and come back with different names. I suggest they do.

If you are on ignore what does it matter?
And looking for approval on an internet forum shows a bit of insecurity. Just as thinking you are the one to give that approval shows a definite lack of real character.

Incidentally, I never put anybody on ignore, never have, never will!
Real men don't ignore anybody and run away, they stand their ground and take them head on..Smile

I don't think that would do cj. It's temperamental and unlikely, at this late stage, to be changed. We would spot them in a jiffy.

But it is certainly very bad manners to sit in a debate with your fingers in your ears, and whistling The Red Flag pointedly, when others at the table are having their say. It shows they have not come to debate at all and that their very presence is a lie. They have come to harangue.

And I think it has its roots in one or more infractions of the Christian code of sexual behaviour and a certain amount of coddling in the formative years. In the vast majority at least. There may be an exception here and there but I haven't met one yet.

Ideal hunting ground for our Media.

It is a same they might never see your post. You nailed it. The intolerance and arrogance they exhibit is what they say are against. Go figure.

@coldjoint,
I have had it figured a long time cj. Churchill mentioned it. So did Eden. And Geoffrey Gorer explained it in The Americans.

I came on here to see if I could help us atheists to claw our way up the ratings. 10% here might as well be 0%. 10% rates as cranky.

We do have something to offer. Aldous Huxley made a move but he was constrained by his own Christian sensibilities and those of his readers. We could put flesh on his framework.

As Dylan says---"It's the ways of the flesh to war against the spirit,
24 hours a day, you can feel it and you can hear it."

It doesn't matter either way, but I do see us as being extreme opposites on pretty much every issue. Including font color...

Another advantage of being on ignore is that whenever I make a typical sensational post, the ignorers don't see it and therefore can't respond, so everybody in internetland who are monitoring A2K (and don't know I'm on ignore) gleefully say-
"Look, look, the atheists haven't got an answer to Romeo's awesome wit and intellect, he's running rings round them, ha ha ha!..Smile

@Olivier5,
"Is it the gods who have put into our hearts this ardour for battle? Or do we all attribute to a god what is really an overmastering impulse of our own?"

Virgil.

Is it our God who has put into our hearts our attitude to sexual morality or do we attribute to God this denial of our impulses and what is really a calculated and scientific strategy designed for our collective survival and which necessarily relegates individual impulses to the animal or barbarian world?

@spendius,
So you are pleading for an atheist (non-God-based) justification for abstinence before marriage and strict monogamy, like Unwin?

It's clear that when a man thinks about sex a bit too often, he may stop doing anything else. So I would agree a certain sexual restraint is socially advantageous. How tight-ass a society must be to remain productive is a matter of debate: it could be that sexual restraint, like anything else, is only productive up to a point and starts to be counter-productive after that point.

@Olivier5,
You must be joking.

btw--here is Virgil's Pussy Whip for you. Venus is imploring a hesitant Vulcan to arm her son Aeneas.

Quote:
With humble suit I beg thy needful art,
O still propitious pow'r, that rules my heart!
A mother kneels a suppliant for her son.
By Thetis and Aurora thou wert won
To forge impenetrable shields, and grace
With fated arms a less illustrious race.
Behold, what haughty nations are combin'd
Against the relics of the Phrygian kind,
With fire and sword my people to destroy,
And conquer Venus twice, in conqu'ring Troy."
She said; and straight her arms, of snowy hue,
About her unresolving husband threw.
Her soft embraces soon infuse desire;
His bones and marrow sudden warmth inspire;
And all the godhead feels the wonted fire.
Not half so swift the rattling thunder flies,
Or forky lightnings flash along the skies.
The goddess, proud of her successful wiles,
And conscious of her form, in secret smiles.

He does as she wishes. Myths eh?
