Oh for pity's sake . . . there's no such thing as an atheist agenda. There are no meetings, no membership dues, we don't have conventions . . .

So--what is going to happen when atheists win the argument and there is an atheist Congress, educational system and media and all the schmucks and trolls have been treated in one of fm's re-training units.

Will females revert to their simian inheritance?

The reason Setanta doesn't read my posts is that they scare him. It is not something to boast about. And there are plenty of atheists like me. A majority actually.

This is not a thread for atheists to discuss things. It is a thread for a certain type of atheist to discuss things. Illiterate atheists.

And it shows. Flaubert and Rabelais would be on Ignore here.

That's right. They don't believe Christian sexual morality is valid. How can God have anything to do with the matter?

They don't believe in patriarchy, private property, family and inheritance. They believe in hiding behind walls (Ignore) and issuing directives.

They can't possibly object to the knickerless can-can on prime-time TV. What grounds would they have? I'm an atheist and I can't think of any.

@Setanta,
I am an atheist. I belong here.

I just happen to be a religious atheist. I am sorry you have such a problem with that. You claim to not be religious, but ironically you are more dogmatic in your atheism than I am.

@maxdancona,
I didn't say you don't belong here. I said that you were trashing the thread, and when you feed the trolls who want to make this thread about religion, you are trashing the thread. I don't give a rat's ass whether or not you are an atheist. You know nothing about me, so you have no basis for claiming that i am a "dogmatic" atheist. In fact, i have pointed out time and again, tediously, in these fora, that the subject never comes up in real life, that i only discuss it online. There is no such thing as "atheism." It's not a belief set, it's a description which the god botherers apply to those who don't hold their belief set. A "religious atheist?" Then you say that i am more dogmatic than you? You don't seem to really understand what words in English mean.

@maxdancona,
Nah!! He's not joking. His having me on Ignore proves that. He knows the weak points in his position and dare not face up to them. He comforts himself by pretending we don't know.

Have you never heard of resistance analysis? It's a psychiatrical term for the patient going all sulky at certain points in the treatment when sensitive points are raised.

Have you ever heard of a revolutionary movement which denies having a manifesto?

My life in intellectual circles has not prepared me for discourse in which arguments are thought to be decisive by declaring protagonists to be "schmucks", "trolls" and such like and ordering them out of the room or, when that is not effective, getting out ear plugs.

It has astounded me. I thought only little girls employed such methods.

Hmmm… I can discuss these topics with (knowledgeable) theists and atheists alike. Let's not be too narrow-minded.

Basically, the idea is to discuss the experience of being an atheist, and ideas which relate to being an atheist.

And as I was saying, there are certain political ideas which to me, are directly related to being an atheist, such as political ecology (the earth is fragile, it's not something God made for our abusing it), sexual rights (forget what the mullah or rabbi or priest tell you about what you can and cannot do with other consenting adults), and the fight against genital mutilations (male circumcision included).

Are you suggesting that you are motivated to take these positions, and to publicly advocate for them because you are an atheist?

@Olivier5,
'To me' underlines the point. Atheists are not bound together by a prescriptive set of rules. The original point of this thread was about atheist getting by in a secular world, in a sense this thread has been a microcosm of real life with the religious trying to call the shots and despairing of us not believing in their imaginary friends.

@hingehead,
Oh yeah. We made it through two pages and most of the third before the loons showed up. It has been deteriorating ever since. A common tactic is the straw man. A religious loon shows up and begins telling us what atheists believe, and why they are wrong. As someone mentioned above, they really can't handle the idea that others don't hew to their beliefs.

I am personally motivated for such causes because it's the right thing to do. Being an atheist has nothing to do with it as far as my motives.

Of course, but they do vote, and in my country they (we) represent if not a majority, at least a strong plurality of the votes, making the idea of an atheist platform a potentiality, or even a reality. Just as the religious right has an agenda, the atheist left has another, which includes gay marriage for instance.

You're confusing the issue with the motive. It concerns me, it just doesn't concern me because i am an atheist.

Nah mate, loads of so-called "christians" hate my guts, this is what some have said about me around the net-

Elbown - "Mick you put me off Christianity and i'm a Christian"
Steve H - "Micks a narrow-minded unchristian unqualified know-nothing silly little man and work-shy racist layabout"
Cymba - "Micks an unchristian aggressive liar showing no fruits of the spirit"
Zeke - "Micks wrong wrong wrong and denies Gods word"
Christian Trucker Pat - "Micks proud, arrogant, self-glorifying, uncharitable, offensive, lacking understanding and talking drivel"
Linda -"Mick's a silly little Brit"
Gloryboundd - "Mick's a senile liar and fool"
SheriNuwine - "Mick you come across as a pervert, do you like cheeky little minxes who play with dollies?"
Sunami - "Mick...the lazy workshy parasite that you are"
"Ghyllie Dhu -"you're a pompous, self-absorbed wingnut who's an embarassment to the faith"
Donbain - " I've got Mick on filter for one very good reason, his intelligence is too low beneath mine to dignify his lewdness with an answer"
JW Neologist-"Romeo is ignorant, malicious, deceiver, liar, deluded"
Reverend Eric Potts - "You disgust me Mick"

PS- Potts is not a real reverend, he's just a jumped-up 'Assistant Methodist Minister', my guess is that he's the caretaker of their local meeting hall and they bestowed that lofty title on him to keep him sweet so he'll go on slopping out their latrines..Smile
