Or are going to withdraw that assertion because it is unsustainable?

I never withdraw anything mate, I'm not a catholic..Wink

No...apparently you do not have the ethics required to acknowledge when you are wrong. No problem...I (and I suspect most of us) were pretty sure that was the case with you.

Quote:
And I never said the garrison wrote anything!

Nope...but you did say you were relying on the "eyewitness accounts" of the Roman army garrison.

So...did you talk to one of them?

Quote:
Like I said, when Christianity began snowballing in popularity the Romans tried to play down the fact that they'd let the Jewish priests talk them into killing Jesus, so no wonder no soldiers wrote a book about him or they'd have ended their military career slopping out the latrines in the Colosseum.

Then how can you rely on their eyewitness accounts, Romeo?

Quote:
Incidentally Jesus cured a Roman centurion's servant (Matt 8:5) but not even he dare go round saying Jesus rocks, or he'd have been busted to buck private.

Cute way of dodging the question, Romeo. But no cigar! Wink

Why not just fess up and get this out of the way?

This thread is way too crowded. It's like being in an AA meeting when a bunch of drunks stumble in.

Mate, in your eager but forlorn hope of trying to score points off me it's obvious you "accidentally" chose to misunderstand me when I said-
"the snooty Jewish priests and the posturing Romans said "Oops better not let on it was us who killed him, quick shred all the documents implicating us or we'll have a Jesusgate scandal on our hands"

You see, I didn't suggest the Romans wrote full-blown gospels, I simply suggested that they and the snooty priests shredded court documents and the like in an attempt to airbrush Jesus out of history and make people think he never existed!
They were only successful in fooling atheists and agnostics who've swallowed it completely..Smile

HEY don't downplay him with them poncey little bottles; fact is he changed at least 120 gallons of water to wine!

MARY- "Hey baby can you help us out? The wedding banquet caterer's have fouled up and the wine's run out"
JESUS- "Waddya expect me to do about it?"
MARY- "Be a good boy and pull some of that miracle **** for us will ya?"..

You really are going to try to tough this nonsense out, huh?

Incredible!

What you actually said, Romeo, was that one of the reason you gave up atheism was, in part, because of the Roman army garrison’s eyewitness accounts of Jesus. Here are your actual words...and a link to where you wrote them:

Quote:
I myself tried being an atheist in my younger days but it only lasted a very short while because I felt very uncomfortable and stoopid because I just couldn't dismiss the entire nation of Israel's and the Roman army garrison's eyewitness accounts of Jesus..

http://able2know.org/topic/141106-402#post-5580457

I challenged from where you derived the “Roman army garrison’s eyewitness accounts of Jesus”…and continue to do so.

You, rather than doing the ethical thing of acknowledging that there is no Roman army garrison’s eyewitness accounts of Jesus”…are continuing to try to squirm your way out of the corner you’ve backed yourself into.

It is funny to watch you on this futile romp…but don’t you think it is time to give it up?

Where are the “Roman army garrison’s eyewitness accounts” that were a part of your giving up atheism???

And in the spirit of friendship...let me give you a bit of help with this:

There are none! You just made that up.

@Frank Apisa,
Apisa should audition for the part of Sherlock Holmes the next time a movie is made of the character. What a sleuth he is eh? What acute conclusions he draws from his merciless observational powers.

And no wonder. Being whipped along by the need to prove that the Christian code of sexual morality is no longer operational, foolish even, is a powerful driver indeed.

THAT'S THE SPIRIT MATE, keep on swinging that club..Smile
Some Roman eyewitness accounts and reports slipped past the shredder and are included in the gospels, for example we even have a trial transcript including Big Boss Pilates own words delivering the "Not guilty" (John 19:6) verdict against Jesus, and his dialogue with the snooty priests who lodged an appeal for the death penalty, and we have the words of the Centurion and his troops at the cross saying "This was the Son of God" (Matt 27:54)

Like I said, to be an atheist i'd have had to dismiss such accounts out of hand but I could find no grounds for doing so, so my "atheist phase" didn't last long at all!

And consider this- it'd have been the EASIEST THING IN THE WORLD for the Roman Empire to simply flatly deny Jesus ever existed, thereby squashing early Christianity like a grape, but they knew it'd never fly because there were just TOO MANY EYEWITNESSES among the garrison, the priests and the ordinary people..Smile

It also would have been THE EASIEST THING IN THE WORLD for the Roman Empire to simply flatly deny that David of Splertz ever existed...but they didn't. There were millions of other Jews they did not "simply flatly deny" ever existed.

Romeo...you really ought to grow a spine...and when someone shows you that you have overstepped...simply say, "Oops, I went too far."

Instead you are attempting this incredible, almost painful to watch charade.

You said you stopped being an atheist in part because of the eyewitness accounts of the Roman army garrison ("eyewitness accounts" that do not exist...and probably never did)...and now that I have called you out on this...you are struggling to do anything but finally acknowledge that it was nothing more than BS.

Keep going, Romeo. This may be painful to watch...but the laughter it causes (and deserves) drowns most of that out. Wink

@rosborne979,
I agree. I'm always having to make my position clear with my siblings that I do not believe in gods. We just spent two weeks with my sister and her husband in Hawaii last month, and I've heard my sister mention "god" every single day.

It does no good to remind her that I do not believe in gods.

That's true with all of our family and friends who believe in god; their life is dedicated to their religion, and there's no way to tell them otherwise.
