Unconvinced about there being a god. Atheism does not posit that "there are no gods." In other words, it's is not a belief devoted to the non-existence of something. Better to ask an atheist what it is that they do believe (what they have been convinced of). I will assume that most will reply that they believe in natural origins of the universe, life, and bio-diversity.
Remember, it's not god versus no-god. It is about existence and cosmic history. So it is god versus nature in who gets credit.

You are quite correct. I'd only add that the term atheist is a term which has more of a religious convention. It suggests a certain derivation from religion and a belief in god. No great effort has risen to rename what could more accurately be called "spiritual skepticism." Likewise, theists could be labeled "anaturalists" or "supernaturalists."
Because labels are less important than ideas, "atheist" is still a useful term.
