Homework isn't a test. As long as they are transcribing it themselves it serves its purpose.

@emshae,
This thread isn't just about you but the issue in general, but since you have perspective from the other side, what is your opinion? How much help should a poster such as yourself expect from the community here? If you post a question, are you hoping for a detailed answer? Tips on how to proceed? A useful link? Do you regularly come back and thank people who have assisted you? Should we expect such thanks?

@emshae,
I can verify what emshae said. For one of her questions, I provided a link. She thanked me and used the "selected answer" feature to give me credit.

@emshae,
Then I think you are the type of poster we like to help here, though honestly I think everyone is welcome most of the time. Most posters here really like helping people who need help. Personally, I want more math questions, so if you have some of those, feel free to post.

@emshae,
You got the sign off on that first step. -15 - 2 = -17
-17*3/7 = - 7 2/7

You were on the right track.

@emshae,
When your dad was in school, nerd was a much more derogatory term than it is today.

@Robert Gentel,
<heehee, I almost reported Robert by accident>

To the first post of the thread:

1.) Yes, homework should be repetition - so, why are there so many questions about it here? I think some is not, as has been said. There are various reasons. One might be because the teacher isn't doing the right thing in regards to HW. One could be because a student has missed school. More below.

2.) Study skills practice, also previously noted, could be a reason. Study skills are lacking tremendously in the culture I work in. The main culprit, it seems, is that adults find it quicker and easier to give the answer instead of giving the tools needed to get to the answer. A little stress can be a good learning mechanism. They SHOULD be using their book so that they know how to use a book (indexes, glossaries, table of contents, heading and sub-headings, etc). Using the internet is fine so long as they learn to distinguish between legit site and non-legit sites. Most teachers wouldn't consider A2K a legit site.

I see it as no different to asking grandad or your next door neighbour.
Any info gleaned still needs to be backed up but "pers comm" is a legit reference in anyones book.
