@DrewDad,
No one watches it for the singing. We watch it for the human comedy, tragedy
and victory of the little nobody.

@Green Witch,
I have absolutely no interest in the human comedy, tragedy, and victory of the little nobody. This stuff bores me silly. I watch it for the singing.

I'm with you, Roberta, and the best singing usually comes in the early weeks as the culling begins.

It's one thing to sing in your bathroom, quite another to sing on key, on cue.

@DrewDad,
Well, apparently some people do watch it for singing. Who would have thunk it? I find that part of the show instantly forgettable. I know some of the winners and runner ups go on to have big hits, but I think it has more to do with the PR machine they hook them in to when they win, and not so much their talent. In most cases, I've seen better performers in dive bars and on Manhattan street corners. Most contestants seem to disappear within a year or two with the occasional resurface at a county fair (we had a former runner up in my county) or singing at the birthday parties for D list celebrities (Blake Lewis comes to mind). Are Jordan Sparks and Taylor Hicks still on anyone's radar? People seem more concerned with Kelly Clarkson's weight gain than her singing. I loved seeing Rubin win, but he too seems to have faded into the horizon.

@Green Witch,
Yes, I agree, Green Witch - but this happens mainly due to manipulated voting.
A Katherine McPhee or Adam Lambert have been more successful as runner ups than their successors. I love the try-outs a lot more than the actual show with
the 12 contestants. It's mostly manipulated then...

@CalamityJane,
I'm not sure if it's manipulation or the fact that only 14 year old girls care enough about the outcome to vote. I think Simon would often have picked a different contestant than the winner since I believe it is his label that puts out their first recording.

I agree, the try-outs are much more fun than the final days of the competition. I rarely watch the last couple of weeks of the show, but I always tune in for the talent search.

I do not miss Paula and I like the guest judges concept.

Yeah - the Shrek song....

Can't for the life of me figure out how they could use that song in Shrek.

Now, I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth, the minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which are heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
......
Nice, but not exactly cartoonfare.

@Joe Nation,
It was after Shrek overheard Fiona talking to Donkey and misunderstood her. Shrek thought she was referring to him when she said who could love such an ugly creature - what Shrek did not realize was Fiona was referring to herself as at night she turned into an Oger. Shrek ran and got the Short prince guy she was supposed to marry and after Fiona left with him - then that song was played.

She was kind of sweet though, very hick country and hard to understand,
genuine nonetheless.

@CalamityJane,
Definately - but I couldn't help but howl with that one.

Some one this morning on a radio station mentioned they thought she was acting - not really as "hickish" as she made out. I wonder to what extent some of these contestants "act" to make them more likeable.

Regards the Tennessee girl: we are not all cosmopolitans in the USA. I've met people in Arkansas and in Oklahoma who have lived their entire lives without ever leaving their home counties and some of those counties are pretty small.
If I remember right, her home town has about 600 people in it. That's a small world. I think her accent is genuine, deep and rich, as accents used to be in America before we all starting listening to radios and TVs.

I do fear for her. She is about to go through a considerable culture shock.
And too, there is this: we love country singers when they sing country songs. We like them less when they try to Rock or sing Standards or some of the other things they make all the contestants do on Idol.

I first watched American Idol in 2007, down in Raleigh, together with Squinney, Bear and the cubs. Although they were very enthusiastic about it, and although their enthusiasm is always infectious, it didn't catch on this time. I remained, and continue to remain, utterly indifferent about American Idol.
