They do the same here for entry to ski resorts.

@gustavratzenhofer,
Don't forget to cover your head, and...uh...stay away from bank lobbies.

I was very grateful for my snow tires yesterday. I'm not a good American.

Some jurisdictions not only require snow tires, they prohibit chains and studded snow tires. I may recall incorrectly, but i believe that's the case in Ohio.

@Setanta,
prolly because tires are made there, and chains are not.

(common sense usually takes a back seat to commerce in these kinds of decisions)

It was 31 when I checked an hour ago. They expect it to get about 34 then hit the teens long before morning. I saved three faucets at work. Somebody had taken off the insulation. Had to use a heat gun to get one going.

That's a possibility, but there is common sense involved, too. Chains and studded snow tires tear up the roads, and in most years, the entire state has to deal with many falls of snow, some of them heavy.

24 fahrenheit this morning in Austin, that -4.4 in Cel.

The saving grace was that there was no trace of wind.

No percipitation either, nice and dry, which = clear roads.

Oh God, it's an oogy mess here if there's any slush, ice or snow on the highways.

It's like "WHEEEE.....I'm gonna act like it's the middle of June, and drive my big honkin SUV or truck at 85 mph right up on someone's bumper."

Yeah buddy.

Those city clowns in the big pick-ups and the SUVs just slay me. They tear down the highway as if the mere ownership of such a vehicle makes them immune to the effects of the weather. One morning, as i was driving from Columbus to Hilliard, Ohio to go to work, the roads were covered with black ice, and the ditches were full of vehicles. The majority, maybe two thirds of them, were SUVs and heavy-duty pick-ups. Idiots.

@chai2,
About 40 years ago, I came upon some black ice, fairly slow speed.
My car was doing figure 8s and figure 16s all over the highway.

I was lucky to stop without hitting anything.

@chai2,
If I was to write a travel guide, rule #1 would be...

If there is ice on the roads in Texas, take a snow day and DO NOT DRIVE.

(seen some wild hairy **** from my truck down there I did...) Shocked

they follow each other into the ditch.

i swear.

There has been no precipitation here. Pure luck. Last time, 14 years ago, we had thick ice and I stayed home three days.

The property owner will be on the job site Sunday. I told the manager to suggest he bring his skates to use on the pool. It is predicted to be 20 degrees at that time.

@edgarblythe,
Went out to drip my faucets about 10:00 p.m. last night. First one went fine, the second one did nothing when I turned on the spigot. Cranked it back and forth a few times, was contemplating how to unfreeze the damn thing, tried it again and finally broke the ice loose.

No precipitation here today, either.

A hair dryer is real handy for warming pipes. Just be careful how you string the electric cord near the expected water.
