Yeah, I saw that on the news last night. Apparently, it is speculated that this may become the snow storm of the century there.

Since this sort of thing happens infrequently, there is reluctance to spend a lot of money on snow removal equipment.

No doubt the English economy will be hit significantly, with many employees staying home from work as well.

Thing is, here, we are not equipped to deal with cold. In the north, pipes get buried. Many houston pipes are on or even above the surface. I have not worried about the pipes at this house in the thirteen years I've been here. But, this week, I am concerned. Hopefully, the forecasters will be off on the duration part.

Are you able to get at the pipes to put heat tape on them? Can you buy heat tape for your pipes in Tejas?

@Setanta,
the neat thing about spells like this, is all the hardware stores and such rapidly sell their inventory of helpful things, then apologize and try like hell to get a new shipment...

@Rockhead,
One November, when i was living in Ohio, i went to a new tire store that a friend had recommended, to get some snow tires. I mean, it was the middle of November. They not only did not have any snow tires, they treated me as though i were goofy. I decided not to patronize them again. I drove by there the following spring, and they were out of business.

@Setanta,
we americans don't do snow tires any longer.

The tire companies have done a good job advertising all season radials into our consciousness...

I have not seen heat tape, but I have covered the pipes and closed some holes in the skirting. In the past, I dripped my faucets, but that may not be possible here. The water pump (located next door) has been shutting down unexpectedly, the past several weeks. The punks won't spend the money to upgrade it.

@Rockhead,
Stupid stupid stupid . . .

In many provinces in Canada, motorists are required to have them after a certain date. A store in Ohio without snow tires is begging to fail. Folks in Ohio aren't stupid, and they know snow. Cleveland routinely gets buried in lake effect snow.

One year I put recaps on my station wagon. I then proceeded to drive from Rhode Island to Long Beach, California, by way of the northern route (my brother hammered away, "it's shorter" - blah blah blah -). So, it snowed, from Providence to Veil. Those recaps took me smoothly through the Rockies, just when they announced over the radio they were considering making snow tires mandatory for that stretch. In fact, those tires were still on it when I sold it, good as ever.

The same thing happens up here in New Hampshire except that the iguana's freeze solid and when they fall their tails stick into the snow like ice sickles, and there they stay until springtime. Smile

@Setanta,
In the Sierra Nevadas, if you're taking one of the toll roads from, say, Tahoe in Nevada into California, they inspect your trunk at the toll-booth to make sure you've got tire chains. No chains, no admittance.
