Trying to narrow down a place to live in Florida

I'm tired of the cold weather and I am looking for a part-time home in West Florida. I've spent a lot of time on the east coast of Florida and I have enjoyed my time more on the west coast; I prefer the Gulf. That being said, I am trying to narrow down a locaton from St. Pete down to Naples and I'm trying to determine what would be best for me. I would prefer to be close to the water, walking distance to a town/shopping, if possible. I enjoy the arts and I enjoy golf, running and walking and I want a safe location. I am in my early 40's and single so would like to be able to meet people (easily). If anyone has any suggestions I would welcome some assistance.

@clabbey,
We enjoyed Siesta Key when we were there. The white sand beach is considered one of the top ten beaches in the ... (world, I think). It's close to Sarasota and Bradenton, either of which may also fit your bill if you don't want to be out on the key.

How about Pinellas Park near St. Pete? Are you looking for a house, condo, or apartment? What sort of community do you like? What kind of shopping?

Holmes Beach or Anna Maria.
Minutes from the Long Boat Key courses.

@clabbey,
I'm assuming correctly your going into early retirement since you didn't ask for possible employment possibilities, non?

@clabbey,
I lived in Sarasota for some 10 years; lovely.

St. Armand's Key is full of trendy little shops, and right down the street is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

@clabbey,
Oh, and between Sarasota & Naples, from my experience: Sarasota has a lot more art galleries and trendy bits. Wealthier than Naples, and a bit snottier as well, if I don't mind saying.

Naples has one of the worst housing markets in the nation right now, so might be a bit depressing. Then again, perhaps ripe for a bargain.

@panzade,
See? Listen to Panz, a fellow long-time Floridian!

I grew up on the East Coast of Florida (Ft. Lauderdale/Miami) and really hated it.

The West Cost is way better, and Sarasota is a gem in the crown. I did not want so many folks around, so moved away; still, if you like people/culture, Sarasota is the place to be.
