Do not talk to the FBI or any other federal law enforcements agencies, as it would seem that the results could be a charge of lying to them even if they could in fact not charge you with the underlying crimes.

Let see Martha Steward would not have served one day in prison if she had not talk to the friendly Feds but just instead had refer them to her lawyer for example.

The ice skater who boyfriend had her opponent knee cap was send to jail for lying to the FBI not for being part of her boyfriend actions.

Below is another example of this rule.

Side note federal law enforcement is free to lie to you however.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reporting from Washington - Federal authorities arrested a Denver-area airport shuttle driver, his father and another man late Saturday in connection with a suspected plot to launch a terrorist attack within the United States, the Justice Department said early today.

Najibullah Zazi, 24, and his father, Wali Mohammed Zazi, 53, were taken into custody at their home in Aurora, Colo., and charged with "knowingly and willfully making false statements to the FBI in a matter involving international and domestic terrorism" during several days of questioning, according to a federal complaint.

Who could be surprised that lying to the FBI during an official investigation is a crime?

After they interview you for days and even if you are as innocent as the Virgin Mary of having sex would you wish to bet that they can find some reason/excuse for charging you with lying to them over some statements of your?

As you are under no obligation to tell then even your opinion of the weather why in the hell would anyone be dumb enough to talk to them and open that can of worms?

But if you happen to trust the FBI, with their known history of abusing their police powers, that in a high profile case where if they did not make an arrest they would look like fools not to do so be my guest.

In fact if is never a good idea innocent or not to allow yourself to be interview by the police for many reasons if they are looking at possibly charging you with a crime. There is a great youtube video with a law professor and a police officer that go over the reasons why it is never a good idea to talk to the police in such a situation. Sorry but I do not have the link at the moment to this video.

Note there more then likely somewhere on my hard drive The Anarchist's Cookbook that I downloaded years ago out of random curious and after the FBI would had seize my computers I am sure that they would state that they found bomb making plans on my computer.

Of course as I have all my hard drives encrypted with truecrypt all they could state was that this evil person have his drives encrypted and had refused to give us the passphrase.

[That is also true of local law enforcement.]

I find it SCARY that any imperfection in what u tell them
can serve as the basis of criminal prosecution.

However, I must say
that if I found out about another 9/11 being planned,
I 'd be pretty quick to call the FBI, anyway. Call me ideosyncratic,
but I think enuf is enuf with the Moslems blowing up
or burning down American buildings.

I have already DONE so, in the 1960s,
when I found that a communist was about to infiltrate
Army Intelligence and Security; ( i.e., I alerted A.I.S.).

@OmSigDAVID,
The question is that with not one little bit of hard evidence of a terrorist plot other then having a number of back packs around and some kinds of plans for bombs building on a computer hard drive if anyone was planning on doing anything at all or it at the very least if the FBI jump the gun.

Taking them in and interviewing them for days on end and then coming up with a charge of only lying to the FBI seem to indicate that there was no ongoing plot.

It would not be the first time after 911 that the FBI had created a large mountain out of a mole hill.

No one is ever obliged to talk to law enforcement. Anyone who does so, and lies in the process, has nothing to whine about--they will have made their bed, and can't complain about being obliged to lie in it.

The problem with that line of thinking is that it allow all forms of bad and evil behaviors by the government in the name of what if thinking.

Common sense would be nice by our government instead of having them acting to show the public they are on top of terrorism threats.

Come on now it take one strong will for a born American citizen to exercise his rights when facing the full power of the FBI less alone a non-citizen and a naturally citizen that come from countries where you do not have such rights.

Look up what happen to the poor Atlanta City security guard Jewell in the park bombing case where he was brought in and told that they needed his help in setting up a training film on how to handle finding a bomb.

They are free to lie to you all they care to and the power balance is hardly near even.

Well, go fuckin' shoot somebody, Bill. The caveat emptor sign above the entrance to the Roman forum applies equally well to people who act in the everyday public sphere. If one does consent to talk to law enforcement, it's really, really stupid to lie to them.

It stupid to talk to them at all even if you do not plan of lying to them and even if you are the Virgin Mary herself and that is the point.

After talking to the FBI for a few days under great pressure are you sure you would not be making misstatements where you could be charge with lying to them even if you was not?

The FBI happen to be up a tree and need to show they are not the key stone cops by making an arrest after the public raids and by talking to them for days these men sadly gave them the ability to do so.

No, the point is that you should not lie in situations in which you can be held criminally liable. That's the point, whether or not you're willing to recognize it.

@Setanta,
The thread title that I had created was title do not talk to the FBI not do not lie to the FBI and that is the point my friend. Telling the truth is not perfect protection from being charge with lying to them but refusing to talk to them at all is a 100 perfect protection.

The two men now behind bars may or may not have lied to the FBI the only thing we know for sure is if they had refused to talk they could not had been arrested on the charge.

Below is link to the video on not talking to law enforcement created by a law professor and a cop and it give the reasons why not. It does not include the added trap of looking at a charge of lying to the Feds.

Not the same thing in fact not in the same planet we are not talking about giving information to the cops of a crime you had seen we are talking about not talking yourself into prison.

There seem to be attempts to move this thread off tropic.
